Recognizing fake news now a required subject in California schools

Pushing back against the surge of misinformation online, California will now require all K-12 students to learn media literacy skills — such as recognizing fake news and thinking critically about what they encounter on the internet.

Gov. Gavin Newsom last month signed Assembly Bill 873, which requires the state to add media literacy to curriculum frameworks for English language arts, science, math and history-social studies, rolling out gradually beginning next year. Instead of a stand-alone class, the topic will be woven into existing classes and lessons throughout the school year.

“I’ve seen the impact that misinformation has had in the real world — how it affects the way people vote, whether they accept the outcomes of elections, try to overthrow our democracy,” said the bill’s sponsor, Assemblymember Marc Berman, a Democrat from Menlo Park. “This is about making sure our young people have the skills they need to navigate this landscape.”

The new law comes amid rising public distrust in the media, especially among young people. A 2022 Pew Research Center survey found that adults under age 30 are nearly as likely to believe information on social media as they are from national news outlets. Overall, only 7% of adults have “a great deal” of trust in the media, according to a Gallup poll conducted last year.

Jack Smith seeks order to protect info on 'uncharged individuals' in classified docs case

Special counsel Jack Smith has filed a motion seeking a protective order to govern discovery in the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump.

Smith cited ongoing investigations that could be compromised along with the potential of releasing identifying information about people who haven’t been charged in his request for the protective order for the disclosure of sensitive material.

Attorneys for Trump and co-defendant Waltine Nauta were notified of the proposal and voiced no objections, according to the filing.
“The government is ready to provide unclassified discovery to the defense,” the filing says.

“The discovery materials include sensitive and confidential information, including the following: personal identifiable information covered by Rule 49.1 of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure; information that reveals sensitive but unclassified investigative techniques, non-public information relating to potential witnesses and other third parties (including grand jury transcripts and exhibits and recordings of witness interviews); financial information of third parties: third-party location information; and personal information contained on electronic devices and accounts."

Trump posts letter demanding Merrick Garland meeting over 'outrageous and unlawful' investigations

Former President Donald Trump posted to his Truth Social platform on Tuesday evening, showing a copy of a letter from his attorneys John Rowley and Jim Trusty, demanding a meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland over the federal investigations being conducted by special counsel Jack Smith.

"We represent Donald J. Trump, the 45th President of the United States, in the investigation currently being conducted by the Special Counsel's Office," the attorneys wrote. "Unlike President Biden, his son Hunter, and the Biden family, President Trump is being treated unfairly. No President of the United States has ever, in the history of our country, been baselessly investigated in such an outrageous and unlawful fashion."

"We request a meeting at your earliest convenience to discuss the ongoing injustice that is being perpetrated by your Special Counsel and his prosecutors," they concluded.

The fake blond skank from Georgia just went there...

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) told a group of Republican donors over the weekend that Americans need to "throw out the trash" when securing the border.

While speaking at a Reagan dinner in Ohio, Greene said that her generation had a responsibility to the country.

"But we also need to remember, where we are the Americans, and we should have a lot of pride in our home and our country," she opined. "And that's why we have to recognize the battle that the radical left has brought to our front door because we need to clean up our house."

"We need to fight for it," she continued. We need to shut our doors. We need to shut our windows. We need to throw out the trash, and we need to clean it up."

Edited to add link to definition of "skank," as I have been gently rebuked for it's use. I meant it using the 3rd entry.

Thom Hartmann - "This is a story as old as capitalism"

In yesterday’s Daily Take, I laid out a scenario where Kevin McCarthy and congressional Republicans could crash our economy by forcing a default on US debt, producing what could easily be a depression as deep and deadly as the Republican Great Depression of the 1930s.

When I discussed this with people on the radio yesterday, several responded with incredulity.

“Why would the Republicans,” they asked, “who generally represent the interests of corporations and the rich above all else, risk crashing the stock market and economy where those very same wealthy people have their money invested?”

The question itself reveals a misunderstanding of how things work for the morbidly rich.

We are 'just beginning,' Tennessee GOP boasts in fundraiser after expelling Democrats

The Tennessee Republican Party waited less than 24 hours to start fundraising off the expulsion of two progressive lawmakers from the state House—openly bragging Friday about what critics have called a blatantly anti-democratic move that shows the party's growing authoritarianism.

State Reps. Justin Jones (D-52) and Justin Pearson (D-86) are two of three Democrats who joined protesters in interrupting a floor session on March 30 to demand gun control in the wake of last week's deadly school shooting in Nashville. Tennessee House Republicans on Thursday voted to expel both Black men from the chamber while a vote to expel their colleague Rep. Gloria Johnson (D-13), who is white, fell short.

In a Friday fundraising email, the Tennessee GOP said: "Their adolescence and immature behavior brought dishonor to the Tennessee General Assembly as they admitted to knowingly breaking the rules. Actions have consequences, and we applaud House Republicans for having the conviction to protect the rules, the laws, and the prestige of the State of Tennessee."

"Our fight is just beginning," the email concludes.

When are taxes due?

2022 federal income tax returns for individuals are now due April 18, 2023. The IRS announced in January that its tax deadline would be pushed back from the usual date, April 15, due to the 2023 calendar.

A note for victims of severe storms: In January, after torrential rainstorms, mudslides and tornadoes hit California, Georgia and Alabama, the IRS announced that victims of severe storms in these states have until May 15, 2023, to file their taxes.

Members of the military serving in a combat zone also get an extension. This extension is typically 180 days after leaving a combat zone.

Whether you’re eligible for the May 15 deadline largely depends on the county you live in and is based on the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster declaration. A list of counties eligible for the May 15 deadline is available on the IRS website. The new deadline applies to various individual and business tax returns as well as payments.
