TNGA Reps. M. Hill-Micah Van Huss Anti-UN Whine Bill: HB0589

The documented back story of how Tea Party political payback over an anti-United Nations bill in the Tennessee House of Representatives earlier this year (2013) killed the popular Tennessee "Wine in Grocery Stores" bill that was widely expected to be enacted into law:

Tennessee General Assembly (TNGA) House Rep. Micah Van Huss (R, Jonesborough) on March 7, 2013 presenting his HB0589 legislation seeking to somehow prevent United Nations observers from monitoring Tennessee elections before the TNGA House Calendar and Rules Committee chaired by Rep. Bill Dunn (R, Knoxville).

Rep. Matthew Hill (R- Jonesborough; chairman of the full TNGA House Local Government Committee) voted yes for HB0610 (a TNGA bill popularly referred to as the Tennessee "Wine in Grocery Stores" Bill) on March 6, 2013 --- just one day before Rep. Jon Lundberg (R, Bristol) would be successful in routing HB0589 by Rep. Micah Van Huss back into Rep. Lundberg's own Civil Justice Subcommittee where Van Huss' anti-United Nations bill would later fail on constitutional grounds on March 26, 2013.

Chairman Matthew Hill killed the HB0610 on March 12, 2013 with his own vote after Lundberg's Tennessee Wine in Grocery Stores bill was presented as the last item of the agenda before Rep. Hill's Local Government Committee. HB0610 failed with a widely unexpected 7-8 vote.

Rep. Lundberg was denied the "common courtesy" and long-standing Tennessee General Assembly practice of rolling HB0610 forward on Chairman Matthew Hill's committee calendar for one week.

The Van Huss HB0589 anti-United Nations legislation as imagined by both Reps. Micah Van Huss and Matthew Hill somehow prohibit representatives of the United Nations from monitoring Tennessee elections.

Freshman legislator Rep. Van Huss is a long-time friend and legislative ward of Rep. Matthew Hill and they both represent Washington County within the Tennessee House of Representatives.

"Local attorney and former state representative Jerome Cochran confirmed Monday he intends to challenge District Attorney General Tony Clark in next year’s general election.

“I’ve had a lot of encouragement,” Cochran said.[David Crockett]“I’m in the early stages of getting a campaign together.”

He declined to comment further on the issue, including the reason he decided to run.

Cochran, 41, of Carter County, was first elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives in 2002 when he unseated longtime state Rep. Ralph Cole. Cochran was a member of the Children and Family Committee, the Judiciary Committee, the Domestic Relations Committee, the Constitutional Protections Subcommittee and the Civil Practice & Procedure Subcommitte..."

TNGA Rep. Jon Lundberg (R-1, Bristol) is now sponsoring an expensive house joint resolution (HJR) that may be not only a misuse and waste of state taxpayer dollars, but also a legislative first within the history of the Tennessee House of Representatives --- Lundberg the the House sponsor of HB0295 that honors both Lundberg himself and the Bristol, Tennessee based Corporate Image public relations firm that he owns:

Bill Information for HB0540

...OFFENSE

Under this bill, a person commits an offense who intentionally, without or prior to the filing of a complaint, lawsuit, or other legal action in any federal or state court of this state communicates, in writing or by electronic communication, with a local government unit or local public servant in a repetitious manner with the intent to influence, persuade, or induce the local government unit or local public servant to terminate, halt or cease a particular policy, practice, action or custom and the person:

(1) Intends the communication to be a threat of initiating legal action against the local government or local public servant challenging the particular policy, practice, action or custom, and a reasonable person would perceive the communication to be a threat of initiating legal action; or
(2) Makes a threat within the communication to initiate legal action against the local government or local public servant challenging the policy, practice, action or custom.

A violation would be a Class A misdemeanor, punishable only by a fine of $2,500.

The offense would not apply to a person providing a written notice to a local government unit or local public servant pursuant to this bill.

ELIZABETHTON — Mayor Leon Humphrey said Thursday that he will present a resolution to the Carter County Commission on Tuesday <Febuary 19> to defend the rights of Carter Countians to keep and bear arms and calls on the state to nullify any federal regulation that would restrict those rights.

“I have been approached by more people over this issue,” Humphrey said of the public’s worries over the expansion of gun control under the administration of President Barack Obama.

Humphrey said the Second Amendment has stood the test of time for more than 200 years and the Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld the amendment and the rights of individual citizens to keep and bear arms..."
