Massive Resilience- Black History Month luncheon today. Pretty incredible.

Massive resilience
Another interesting Black History Month lunch and learn at work today. Our guest speaker was a woman who lived in Prince Edward County during "massive resistance". Schools were closed for 5 years rather then integrate them. She went to a school in the basement of a church for 2 years. Those years were lost for those who didn't got any kind of school. The man who would one day be her husband graduated high school at the age of 21 to give you an idea.

Her father, with the help of some coworkers on the railroad, found an abandoned house just over the county line in Appomattox. Mom put up some drapes and dad changed the locks and put up a mailbox to make it look like a functioning house. Each day he'd dropped 5 kids off on his way to work. They'd wait behind the house and when they heard the bus coming they'd go in the backdoor and out the front as if they lived there. Word grew and it ended up with 21 kids passing through the house. She said the questions from other kids were "21 of you live in that house?" "How can you have 3 people in 5th grade and 5 in 9th?" She said they were just told to shrug it off and not saying anything. No county officials ever asked for proof of residence of legal guardianship- maybe they were just turning a blind eye to the obvious. They graduated from high school. She went on to earn a college degree and end up retiring from a job in the Prince Edward County Administration.

Kaepernick - Michael Wilbon just went OFF, I mean OFF, on PTI

Discussing the settlement between the NFL and Colin and Eric Reed.

Pardon the Interruption on ESPN. Rebroadcast at 6 and 6:30 on ESPN as well as other platforms.

"These are VENGEFUL people" he mentioned "vengeful" at least 5 times. Speaking of NFL owners.
Kornheiser, clearly a liberal guy, actually said "let me explain this" and the said that Rober Kraft (Patriots) is among the most liberal owners in the NFL.

Wilbon finished by saying "They don't want to pay him to play, they want to pay him to DANCE"

Paraphrased.

Trump's NYC eateries written up for 'live mice,' other 'critical' health code violations

Trump's NYC eateries written up for 'live mice,' other 'critical' health code violations in recent months

Health inspections at Trump properties from Midtown Manhattan to the Bronx’s Ferry Point reveal the President’s namesake company still struggles to keep its day-to-day operations clean — though similar infractions have been reported for years.

Violations at the President’s crown jewel and Manhattan residence — Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue — are perhaps the most gag-inducing.

City Department of Health inspectors visited the tower’s cafe and grill on July 11, 2018 and found “evidence of mice or live mice” in and around the kitchen, according to records that haven’t previously been reported. The inspectors categorized the violation as “critical.”

The inspectors also deemed the restaurant “not vermin proof” and said its “conditions” are “conducive to attracting vermin” and “allowing vermin to exist.”

Moreover, the eatery’s “food contact surfaces” had not been properly maintained and “unacceptable” material had been used to build some “non-food contact” stations, making them practically impossible to clean.

Police sources: New evidence suggests Jussie Smollett orchestrated attack

https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/16/entertainment/jussie-smollett-attack/index.html

Chicago (CNN)Two law enforcement sources with knowledge of the investigation told CNN that Chicago Police believe Jussie Smollett paid two men to orchestrate the assault.

The brothers, who were arrested Wednesday, were released without charges Friday after Chicago police cited the discovery of "new evidence." The sources told CNN that the two men are now cooperating fully with law enforcement.

The sources told CNN that there are records that show the two brothers purchased the rope found around Smollett's neck at an Ace Hardware store in Chicago.

Old terminal at NY's JFK airport turned into hotel. Rooms start at $249

The TWA Hotel Turns an Abandoned Airport Terminal Into a Midcentury Dream

An abandoned airport terminal at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport has been reborn as the TWA Hotel, a stylish stay channeling the jet age. While the once-groundbreaking Trans World Airlines ceased operations in 2001, and the terminal closed in October of that year, the luxe hotel pays homage to the original architecture of the 1962 building designed by architect Eero Saarinen.

"Restoring the TWA Hotel is a labor of love for our entire team," says Tyler Morse, CEO of MCR and MORSE Development. "We are counting down the days until the landmark building, dark since 2001, is filled with life again."

Come May 15th, the hotel will welcome travelers for long- or short-term stays—even just for a quick place to shower, catch up on emails, get in a bit of exercise, and nosh on gourmet eats before heading to the next stop. Reservations for the TWA Hotel open at noon EST on February 14, with room rates starting at $249.

Who likes coleslaw? Giant Tasmanian cabbage

An Australian couple staved off pests for more than nine months to grow a giant cabbage almost as big as a person.

Rosemary Norwood and her husband, Sean Cadman, who live in the Tasmanian valley of Jackeys Marsh, began growing the giant vegetable in April last year at their eco-tourism guesthouse.

After months of plucking away less-successful surrounding cabbages, the couple left the savoy to grow undisturbed until late January.

"It doesn't always work out like this," Norwood told CNN, attributing the success to "a good, wet spring, good rainfall and hot weather in the early summer."
