Budget crisis follows Malloy into Clinton campaign event

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy was reminded Thursday there is no escaping the budget crisis, not even at a presidential campaign event: A Sandy Hook mother gently called him out in front of Hillary Clinton and the national press for cuts he is making to mental health and social services.

Nelba Marquez-Greene, whose 6-year-old daughter, Ana Grace, was among the 20 children killed at the school in Newtown, was on a stage with Clinton in the North End of Hartford when she addressed Malloy, a Clinton supporter sitting at the front of the audience.

“I’m concerned about our mental health programs and the devastating cuts that are happening right now as we speak,” said Marquez-Greene, one of five panelists at a Clinton campaign event on gun violence in a crowded YMCA gymnasium.

The audience of several hundred applauded.

Top Federal Reserve official donates to Hillary Clinton’s campaign

Federal Reserve governor Lael Brainard has contributed $2,700 to the presidential campaign of Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, according to federal records, an unusual donation from a top official at an institution that prides itself on political independence.

Brainard joined the nation’s central bank as a member of its Washington-based board of governors in June 2014 after serving as a senior official at the Treasury Department. Since then, she has made three donations directly to the Clinton campaign and one contribution to a joint fundraiser supporting her bid.

The most recent -- and largest -- donation was Feb. 1 for $1,950. Brainard has now reached the maximum limit for personal contributions.

Federal Reserve board members are presidential appointees, but the central bank has fiercely defended its decisions as free from political influence. Republicans have criticized the Fed for keeping interest rates too low for too long and have supported several bills that attempt to rein in the central bank’s power. Meanwhile, Democrats are urging the Fed not to raise interest rates too quickly to support faster growth. Both parties have questioned the Fed’s relationship with the big banks that it is charged with regulating.

$182 million: Bernie Sanders equals Hillary Clinton's campaign fundraising

Washington (CNN)For Bernie Sanders, slow and steady wins the fundraising race.

The Vermont senator began his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination last year with a sizable financial disadvantage compared to front-runner Hillary Clinton. By the end of last June, Sanders had raised just shy of $14 million for his campaign, less than a third of the $47.5 million Clinton had raised for hers.

But the Sanders campaign slowly and steadily eroded the former secretary of state's fundraising advantage. Sanders slightly edged Clinton in contributions in 2015's fourth quarter, but his fundraising operation didn't kick into high gear until 2016. His campaign has outraised Clinton's every month this year by at least 50%. In March alone, "Bernie 2016" received $44.7 million in contributions, compared to $26.3 million for "Hillary for America."

Now, Sanders and Clinton are essentially even in total campaign contributions, with each campaign bringing in more than $180 million for their bids by the end of March.

Bill Clinton Blames Millennials For Anger, Economy, Congress

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Millennials, there’s a reason Americans are so anxious and angry in this election, Bill Clinton says. It’s you.

It’s no secret that Hillary Clinton’s campaign has been frustrated that younger people are flocking to Bernie Sanders, a septuagenarian democratic socialist.

But in a speech on Thursday to about 1,000 people in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the former president, who was stumping on his wife’s behalf, betrayed yet another frustration with younger Americans. He said the country would be in a much better place now if the youth had not been so apathetic and had voted six years ago, when the tea party wave put Republicans in charge of the House of Representatives.

Clinton got to that point by first praising the job President Barack Obama has done in bringing the country back while noting that incomes have stagnated for most people.

47 Despicable Senate Republicans Vote To Deny Aid To Flint’s Lead Poisoned Children

Senate Republicans forced a vote on an amendment today that would have denied federal aid to the poisoned children of Flint, Michigan. What is even more deplorable is that 47 Senate Republicans voted not help lead poisoned children.

The Coates Amendment to the Energy and Water Agencies Appropriations Act failed by a vote of 48-49. All Senate Democrats, with the exception of Sen. Claire McCaskill (MO) voted against the amendment. Five Republicans Sens. Lisa Murkowski (AK), Bill Cassidy (LA), Rob Portman (OH), Lamar Alexander (TN) and Dean Heller (NV) joined with Democrats in voting against the amendment, but 47 Senate Republicans voted not to provide federal aid for children that were poisoned by the decisions of Michigan’s Republican governor.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid blistered Republicans for their vote:

Three of the four Republican cosponsors of legislation to help the people of Flint voted to eliminate the funding source today. It is a disturbing trend that Senate Republicans are regularly unable to fulfill their commitments. The Senate cannot function if senators do not keep their word.

Republicans have proven once again that they are willing to turn their backs on the people of Flint. Every time the Senate comes close to a bipartisan compromise to help children suffering from lead poisoning, Republicans find an excuse to back away. Today, Republicans voted to remove a funding source for legislation to tackle Flint’s water crisis without offering a single dime to clean their poisoned water. More than 100,000 people – including 9,000 children under the age of six – have been poisoned in the city of Flint, and it is unconscionable that Republicans would attempt to deny them the support they desperately need.

Sadly, Republicans are happy to attack clean energy programs to please the Koch brothers, but they remain unwilling to lift a finger to help the people of Flint. I call on Republicans to end this unwarranted obstruction and protect the people of Flint and millions throughout the nation.

POLITICSBUSTED: Pro-Clinton Super PAC Caught Spending $1 Million on Social Media Trolls

A Super PAC headed by a longtime Clinton operative is spending $1 million to hire online trolls to “correct” Bernie Sanders’ supporters on social media.

Correct The Record (CTR), which is operated by Clinton attack dog and new owner of Blue Nation Review David Brock, launched a new initiative this week called “Barrier Breakers 2016” for the purpose of debating supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders — or “Bernie Bros,” as they’re referred to in Correct the Record’s press official release — on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and other social media platforms.

The “Barrier Breakers” will also publicly thank Hillary Clinton’s superdelegates and fans for supporting her campaign. The paid trolls are professional communicators, coming from public relations and media backgrounds.

“The task force staff’s backgrounds are as diverse as the community they will be engaging with and include former reporters, bloggers, public affairs specialists, designers, Ready for Hillary alumni, and Hillary super fans who have led groups similar to those with which the task force will organize,” CTR stated.
