Reporter blows lid off Fox-Trump partnership: ‘They make money by enraging Americans’

Reporter Jane Mayer came out Monday with a bombshell article probing the symbiotic relationship between President Donald Trump and Fox News — and she said their shared business model is undermining U.S. democracy.

The New Yorker investigative journalist appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to discuss the article, and she said her reporting found the relationship between the president and his favorite channel was even closer than it appeared.

“What Fox does is it makes money by enraging Americans, that’s how they keep them glued to the television set,” Mayer said. “It’s very much the same model that Trump has to keep his base engaged. So you’ve got a rage-based model for both of them, and what it’s doing is it’s spinning the country in an increasingly inflamed direction, and so it has a huge effect on our national politics.”

Mayer said the president and Fox News worked together to amplify their messages.

“It carries his message and it also gives him a message a lot of the time,” she said. “Trump picks up on what he sees on Fox, and I’ve got quotes from people who are very close in to the White House, people who worked in the White House, in and out of Fox, saying what you’ve got is a dysfunctional White House all of the time with no normal decision-making process, where a lot of the policy-making is the president picking up what’s on Fox.”

“Then I describe how Fox puts on what it does on the news, which is shocking in many ways,” Mayer added. “I mean, taking stuff straight off of the most crackpot blogs. Don’t take it me, take it from the people who are quoted from Fox saying so.”

Robert Reich: Dear Donald, We're Letting You Go: America's Final Letter to Trump

Dear Donald, We're Letting You Go: America's Final Letter to Trump | Opinion

Dear Mr President,

While we may disagree about the credibility of Michael Cohen, and have different views about what Special Counsel Robert Mueller will ultimately reveal, we agree on practical things—like obeying the Constitution and not letting big corporations and the wealthy run everything.

Your 35-day government shutdown was a senseless abuse of power. So too your “national emergency” to build your wall with money Congress refused to appropriate.

When you passed your tax bill you promised our paychecks would rise by an average of $4,000 but we never got the raise. Our employers used the tax savings to buy back their shares of stock and give themselves raises instead.

Then you fooled us into thinking we were getting a cut by lowering the amounts withheld from our 2018 paychecks. We know that now because we’re getting smaller tax refunds.

At the same time, many big corporations aren’t paying a dime in taxes. Worse yet, they’re getting refunds.

For example, GM is paying zilch and claiming a $104 million refund on $11.8 billion of profits. Amazon is paying no taxes and claiming a $129 million refund on profits of $11.2 billion. (This is after New York offered it $3 billion to put its second headquarters there.)

They aren’t breaking any tax laws or regulations. That’s because they made the tax laws and regulations. You gave them a free hand.

You’re supposed to be working for us, not for giant corporations. But they’re doing better than ever, as are their top executives and biggest investors. Yet nothing has trickled down. We’re getting shafted.

Which is why more than 75% of us (including 45% who call ourselves Republicans) support Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s proposed 70% tax on dollars earned in excess of $10 million a year.

And over 60% of us support Elizabeth Warren’s proposed 2% annual tax on households with a new worth of $50 million or more.

You’ve also shown you don’t have a clue about healthcare. You promised us something better than the Affordable Care Act but all you’ve done is whittle it back.

A big reason we gave Democrats control of the House last November was your threat to eliminate protection for people with pre-existing conditions.

Are you even aware that 70% of us now favor Medicare for all?

Most of us don’t pay much attention to national policy but we pay a lot of attention to home economics. You’ve made our own home economics worse.

We’ll give you official notice you’re fired on 3 November 2020, if not before. Until then, you can keep the house and perks, but you’re toast.

Respectfully,

America.

The pre-impeachment, public Trump trial

https://www.axios.com/donald-trump-impeachment-house-democrats-strategy-d98aab41-5cc3-43a6-9f07-963a2982f57b.html

The pre-impeachment, public Trump trial

House Democratic leaders worry impeachment proceedings against President Trump could backfire if they move too fast.

The state of play: They plan to pursue a slow-bleed strategy with lengthy public hearings and scores of witnesses to methodically pick apart Trump's finances and presidency.

What's new: In an investigation being coordinated among six to eight House committees, Trump will essentially be on public trial for months to come, with topics that include abuse of power, obstruction of justice, conflicts of interest (including profit from the Trump International Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue) and money laundering.

Why it matters: Democrats want to create a large, damning public record of testimony, documents and investigative reports.

Speaker Pelosi and other top Democrats don't want to take up impeachment if it's going to go nowhere in the Republican-controlled Senate.

So with huge energy in the party pushing for impeachment, leaders are using the congressional investigation to buy time.

A source close to the House leadership told me: "Many in leadership believe impeachment could help Trump get re-elected," and instead will try to "pivot the anger to defeating him on the campaign side next year. ... The last thing they want to do is help Trump like it eventually helped Clinton."

Top Democrats say an opening area of attention is Trump's attacks on the FBI and intelligence agencies, and the long-term ramifications for national security.

House Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler told George Stephanopoulos yesterday on ABC's "This Week" that the committee will issue document requests today to more than 60 people, including White House and Justice officials, Don Jr., and Trump Organization CFO Alan Weisselberg.

Nadler said the mission is "to present the case to the American people about obstruction of justice, corruption and abuse of power."

Nadler said that "to sabotage a fair election would be an impeachable offense," but added: "Impeachment is a long way down the road."

A key part of the House strategy is to engage the public on all those hot topics.

So expect lots of public hearings and aggressive pushes for the release of documents, most especially the Mueller report and all the investigative materials that went into it.

Be smart: Garrett M. Graff of WIRED told me the House strategy reflects the fact that what's most likely to move public opinion isn't any single crime or bombshell, but "when a pattern of behavior is so clear it becomes un-defensible."

John Oliver Gives Ivanka Trump a Serious Reality Check: You Got Nothing on 'Merit'

John Oliver Gives Ivanka Trump a Serious Reality Check: You Got Nothing on ‘Merit’
The ‘Last Week Tonight’ host had some choice words for the president’s daughter (and senior adviser), who got every job she’s ever had because she’s “Donald Trump’s daughter.”

But the HBO host was most riled up by the revelation that President Trump is said to have ordered his former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly to grant Jared Kushner top-secret security clearance—despite the protestations of Kelly and national security officials.

“One major issue with Jared having access to state secrets is, you know, it’s Jared—a guy who, even among Jareds, stands out as the ‘Jared’ of the group,” joked Oliver. “But the other issue with his top secret clearance concerns national security,” said Oliver, pointing to a Washington Post report stating that officials from Israel, China, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates saw Kushner as “exploitable” and hoped to manipulate him—not to mention how Kushner, as Oliver noted, “initially failed to disclose meetings with Russian agents to the FBI, and there have been concerns over his dealings with foreign businessmen and officials.”

Of course, both President Trump and his daughter—and senior adviser—Ivanka have repeatedly denied on the record that Kushner received any sort of special treatment.

“The president had no involvement pertaining to my clearance or my husband’s clearance,” Ivanka told Abby Huntsman on The View.

“Oh, please,” said Oliver. “I honestly don’t know what’s sadder there: either Ivanka is knowingly lying about her Dad forcing her and Jared’s security clearance through, or she genuinely thinks they got it on merit on their own. And if it is the latter, Ivanka, there are some things that you really should know.”

He continued: “You only became an executive vice president of the Trump Organization at 24 because you’re Donald Trump’s daughter, not because you are a 24-year-old business prodigy. You only got a book deal because you’re Donald Trump’s daughter, not because you’re a brilliant author and wordsmith. And you only hosted the Miss Teen USA pageant because your Dad owned the contest, not for your sparkling on-camera presence.”

Trump Is Freaking Because Adam Schiff Is Investigating Him For Russian Money Laundering

Trump Is Freaking Because Adam Schiff Is Investigating Him For Russian Money Laundering

House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) revealed that he is investigating Trump Russian money laundering, which explains why the president is freaking out.

Schiff said on CBS’s Face The Nation, “We are certainly looking deep into the set of issues surrounding Moscow Trump Tower. We’re also looking at persistent allegations that the Russians have been laundering money through the Trump Organization. I don’t know if that’s true, but if it is again, it’s a profound compromise of this president.”

Adam Schiff Has Jurisdiction to Look At Trump’s Finances Because He May Be Compromised By Russia

Trump’s rant about Schiff at CPAC takes on a whole different context when reviewed after what Rep. Schiff said on Sunday.

At CPAC Trump said, “I saw little shifty Schiff yesterday. It’s the first time he went into a meeting and he said we’re going to look into his finances. I said where did that come from? He always talked about Russia, collusion with Russia, the collusion delusion. Now we have people that lost and unfortunately, you put the wrong people in a couple of positions. And they leave people for a long time that shouldn’t be there. And all of a sudden, they’re trying to take you out with bullshit, okay?”

https://twitter.com/PoliticusSarah/status/1101934702250913794

Trump doesn’t want investigators to follow the money, because the heart of his relationship with Russia is cold hard cash. There has long been speculation that Trump got the money for his projects by laundering cash in violation of US sanctions for Russia.

Adam Schiff has the jurisdiction to investigate Trump’s finances because he is probing to see if Trump has been compromised by a foreign power. Rep. Schiff knows where to look, and he is about to expose the potential financial crimes that Trump committed with Russia.

Dems feel growing pressure on impeachment

Dems feel growing pressure on impeachment
By Mike Lillis - 03/02/19 02:00 PM EST

House Democratic leaders are facing new pressures over a radioactive debate they've fought to keep under wraps: the impeachment of President Trump.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has confronted the question since the earliest days of Trump's White House tenure, hoping to discourage any talk of ousting the president so long as the effort remains strictly partisan.

But a group of liberals in her ranks have pressed on, introducing articles of impeachment while threatening additional floor votes on the legislation. And this week's explosive testimony by Trump's former personal attorney, who lodged a string of allegations that the president broke numerous laws before and since he took office, has only fueled the impeachment push — and complicated efforts by Democratic leaders to prevent debate over the volatile "I" word from cascading into an intraparty free-for-all.

Appearing before the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Michael Cohen told lawmakers that Trump had a direct hand in distributing hush money payments to a porn star during the 2016 campaign — payments that would violate campaign finance laws — and also steered an unsuccessful effort to expand his business empire in Russia even as he was seeking the White House.

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), who introduced articles of impeachment in the last Congress, told The New York Times after the hearing that impeachment "is almost going to be impossible not to deal with."

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), another impeachment supporter, told MSNBC that Congress has a constitutional responsibility to check Trump's business dealings because "this is not going to be our last CEO" in the White House. And impeachment advocates off of Capitol Hill are pointing to Michael Cohen's testimony as just the latest — and perhaps most damning — evidence that Trump is unfit for office.

Trump Aides Keep Writing Memos to Protect Themselves

Trump Aides Keep Writing Memos to Protect Themselves
Their urge to document the president's requests and interactions is justified by his behavior.
David A. Graham

Time and again, Trump has attacked former aides only to have their contemporaneous documentation back them up. Cohen has become a frequent target of the president, who has called him a “rat” and said he is not to be trusted. Cohen is in fact a convicted liar, who will soon report to prison to serve time for tax evasion, bank fraud, and lying to Congress. That makes the tape even more important, because it requires less faith in Cohen.

Comey and Trump have been engaged in a dramatic he-said, he-said drama, but the fact that the former FBI director’s memos were written at the time of the conversations lends his version credence (as does Trump’s prolific lying). McCabe was fired for lying to investigators (which he claims was a pretense), but once again, his memos from the time hold more weight.

Trump has not publicly attacked McGahn or Kelly in the same way, but he has tension with both men. He and Kelly were reportedly barely on speaking terms by the time the chief of staff left the White House. Trump had become disgruntled with McGahn and publicly announced that the lawyer would be leaving before telling McGahn himself.

In short, if aides are keeping these notes because they feel the president will turn on them or try to point fingers at them, they are not wrong. While the Comey, McCabe, and Cohen documentations are by now old news, the news about McGahn and Kelly opens up the question of how many other memos from the two men there might be, and what topics they could cover. It seems likely that Mueller would already have anything from McGahn’s shop related to the Russia probe—McGahn cooperated extensively with the special counsel—but there’s no telling what trove of revelations might exist for the rest of the American people.

Trump Is Now Illegally Promoting His Golf Course As Foreign Policy

https://www.politicususa.com/2019/03/02/trump-illegal-golf-course.html

Trump Is Now Illegally Promoting His Golf Course As Foreign Policy

Trump is now illegally claiming that his golf course in Scotland is a part of US foreign policy.
Trump is breaking the law

Donald Trump tweeted a commercial for his golf course and wrote about it:

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1101837499230498816

Trump’s tweet is a violation of the federal statute that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain. Donald Trump is using his status as president to proclaim a for-profit golf course a part of US foreign policy so that he and his family can profit off of the publicity.

Trump is using the presidency to market his golf course

A private for-profit golf course is not foreign policy. The relationship between the United States and the UK was a strong alliance, so Trump’s golf course did nothing to help US foreign policy. The reality is that Trump’s Scottish golf course is losing piles of money. The course hasn’t been profitable for decades. Trump is using his platform as president to try to make money for his failing business.

Trump’s behavior is an abuse of presidential power, and almost as importantly, it serves as confirmation of what Michael Cohen said during his testimony.

Cohen said:

Donald Trump is a man who ran for office to make his brand great, not to make our country great. He had no desire or intention to lead this nation – only to market himself and to build his wealth and power. Mr. Trump would often say, this campaign was going to be the “greatest infomercial in political history.”

He never expected to win the primary. He never expected to win the general election. The campaign – for him – was always a marketing opportunity.

Michael Cohen was right. Trump isn’t going to govern or lead. He is only here to suck the credibility out of the presidency and turn it into a marketing opportunity for Trump.

This is the type of damage that the current president is doing to our institutions that will take years to remove the Trump stink and restore honor to the Oval Office.
