American investigators may look into payment to police (Murdoch may have broken anti-corruption law)

Source: The Independent UK

A payment to a British police force by a News Corp company accused of using piracy to crack a rival pay-TV service could be studied by US authorities investigating whether Rupert Murdoch's conglomerate broke America's strict anti-corruption laws, a former US Department of Justice lawyer claimed yesterday.

As revealed in yesterday's Independent, Surrey Police confirmed it had received £2,000 from the Surrey-based technology company NDS in 2000 for use "in the fight against organised crime". NDS said the payment ordered by its security chief Len Withall – a former Detective Chief Inspector at Surrey Police – following "some work", was a "one-off charitable donation" and produced an acknowledgement letter.

Bradley Simon, a former lawyer at the US Department of Justice, was reported as saying that the US authorities would be interested in the payment: "The DoJ is focused on payments to officials. The DoJ feels a lot of pressure to make cases when there is a lot of scrutiny."

Sweet! - Fox "News" host urges viewers to ‘vote Republican’

It’s no secret that Fox News leans to the right, but one host may have crossed the line on Friday when he actively encouraged viewers to “vote Republican” if they didn’t like big government.

During an interview with Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Fox & Friends co-host Steve Doocy seemed to endorse the congressman’s “Path to Prosperity” budget.

“This really is kind of a campaign document because it draws a bright line between what the Republicans stand for and what the Democrats stand for,” he explained. “If you want big government, then the Democrats are your party.”

Doocy added: “Whereas, if you want a party that’s making some hard choices, vote Republican.”

Sanford COVER-UP: Officer Timothy Smith's Fabricated Evidence

At some point, it was decided to concoct a cover story, which involved Officer Timothy Smith fabricating evidence about Zimmerman bleeding from the nose and head and having grass all over his back. Most likely, he never received any medical attention from the fire department at all.

Within 34 minutes, Zimmerman was at the police station looking to be completely uninjured and with no signs of grass or wetness on his jacket.

Officer Smith's Fabricated Report (see page 7 of 8):

and then there is this:

and this:
"Zimmerman was standing over the body with -- basically straddling the body with his hands on Trayvon's back," Cutcher said. "And it didn't seem to me that he was trying to help him in any way. I didn't hear any struggle prior to the gunshot.

Mitt Romney's PAC Funded Anti-Gay Marriage Group Under The Radar

Source: Huffington Post

While neither the donation nor Romney's opposition to same-sex marriage were a secret, the precise way in which he contributed to NOM remained under tight wraps until Friday...

................

But when Romney eventually made his donation, he did so quietly, and through an unusual channel. Records filed by Romney's Free and Strong America PAC with the Federal Election Commission did not include details of that $10,000 donation. Nor did NOM's public 990 form. In fact, record of the payment was only uncovered Friday when the pro-gay rights Human Rights Campaign was sent a private IRS filing from NOM via a whistleblower. The Human Rights Campaign shared the filing with The Huffington Post.

Asked for comment, an aide to Romney said that the donation was made through the Alabama chapter of the Free and Strong America PAC. State records confirm this. However, the 990 NOM filed lists the donation as having come from PO Box 79226 in Belmont, Massachusetts.

Thought it might be a good day to remember - "Bush Looking Into Putin's Eyes"

Looking in Putin's Eyes
http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/12623580-12623583-slarge.jp
Aug. 18 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush once told the world that he had looked Vladimir Putin in the eye, gotten ``a sense of his soul'' and found the Russian leader to be ``very straightforward and trustworthy.''

That moment in 2001 was the apex of a belief -- central to American thinking since at least the 1991 Soviet collapse -- that a close personal relationship between the leaders of Russia and the U.S. could be a cornerstone of American foreign policy and a stabilizing influence in international affairs

GOP Ad Uses Doctored SCOTUS Audio

GOP Ad Uses Doctored SCOTUS Audio
Republicans Alter U.S. Supreme Court Audio in Obama Web Attack

Bloomberg News had the good sense to actually compare the actual argument audio with what the RNC distributed. It turns out to have been materially doctored. As the Bloomberg piece says, “A review of a transcript and recordings of those moments shows that Verrilli took a sip of water just once, paused for a much briefer period, and completed his thought, rather than stuttering and trailing off as heard in the doctored version.”

I’ve been in practice for seventeen years, and the blog has existed for ten, and this is the single most classless and misleading thing I’ve ever seen related to the Court. It is as if the RNC decided to take an incredibly serious and successful argument that has the chance to produce a pathbreaking legal victory for a conservative interpretation of the Constitution, drag it through the mud, and vomit on it.

GOP Attorney General Suing Over Obamacare Supports Single-Payer: ‘I Trust The Government More’

GOP Attorney General Suing Over Obamacare Supports Single-Payer: ‘I Trust The Government More’
By Scott Keyes posted from ThinkProgress Health on Mar 30, 2012 at 1:20 pm

WASHINGTON, DC — According to one Republican attorney general in the lawsuit against the health care individual mandate, the problem with Obamacare is that it’s not a government takeover of health care.
ThinkProgress spoke with Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell outside the Supreme Court on Wednesday. Caldwell opposes Obamacare and the individual mandate, but for a different reason than most of his fellow litigants: it props up the private health insurance industry. “Insurance companies are the absolute worst people to handle this kind of business,” he declared. “I trust the government more than insurance companies.” Caldwell went on to endorse the idea of a single-payer health care system, saying it’d “be a whole lot better” than Obamacare:

KEYES: You don’t think the subsidies for low-income people are going to be helpful?

CALDWELL: No, no. The worst thing you can do is give it to an insurance company. I want to make my point. All insurance companies are controlled in their particular state. If you have a hurricane come up the east coast, the first one that’s going to leave you when they gotta pay too many claims is an insurance company. Insurance companies are the absolute worst people to handle this kind of business. I trust the government more than insurance companies. If the government wants to put forth a policy where they will pay for everything and you won’t have to go through an insurance policy, that’d be a whole lot better.

Etch A Sketch Launches New Ad Campaign

The maker of Etch a Sketch on Thursday launched a new ad campaign, taking advantage of the political conversation centering around the classic toys. "Etch a Sketch is proud to be part of the national conversation," the ads read. A top Romney adviser recently said the general election is like an "Etch a Sketch," after the primary race is done the campaign can reset its priorities.

Killed at Home: White Plains, NY Police Called Out on Medical Alert Shoot Dead Black Veteran, 68

As the Trayvon Martin case draws national attention, we look at another fatal shooting of an African-American male that has received far less scrutiny. Kenneth Chamberlain, Sr., a 68-year-old African-American Marine veteran, was fatally shot in November by White Plains, NY, police who responded to a false alarm from his medical alert pendant. The officers broke down Chamberlain’s door, tasered him, and then shot him dead. Audio of the entire incident was recorded by the medical alert device in Chamberlain’s apartment. We’re joined by family attorneys and Chamberlain’s son, Kenneth Chamberlain, Jr., who struggles through tears to recount his father’s final moments, including the way police officers mocked his father’s past as a marine. "For them to look at my father that way, (with) no regard for his life, every morning I think about it," he says.
