Trump tampered with witnesses. These Senate Repubs voted to oust Bill Clinton for doing just that.

............14 current Republican senators, some of whom were then serving in the House, voted either to impeach or convict Clinton on the obstruction charge. Some specifically cited his actions toward the witnesses when explaining their votes.

Mitch McConnell, Kentucky

... And, again, the undisputed evidence shows that the president took the path of lies and deceit.

… I am completely and utterly perplexed by those who argue that perjury and obstruction of justice are not high crimes and misdemeanors.

Chuck Grassley, Iowa

It is clear to me that the president committed serious crimes… These actions weren’t just outrageous and morally wrong. They were also illegal. They were a direct assault on the integrity of the judicial process.

Lindsey Graham, South Carolina

...[N]obody because of their position in society has the right to cheat and to get somebody to lie for them, even as the president. That means we’re not a nation of men or kings. We’re a nation of laws, and that’s what this case has always been about to me … He turned the judicial system upside down, every way but loose. He sent his friends to lie for him. He lied for himself. [See also: CNN.]

Richard Burr, North Carolina

I believe the facts presented by the judiciary committee prove beyond a reasonable doubt that President Clinton repeatedly lied to a grand jury and encouraged a witness before that grand jury to provide false information. The United States is a nation of laws, not men. And I do not believe we can ignore the facts or disregard the constitution so that the president can be placed above the law.

Mueller's Evidence Establishes Probable Cause For At Least 4 Trump Obstruction Charges

New legal analysis from Law Works shows that the Mueller Report establishes probable cause to believe that President Trump committed obstruction of justice in at least four of the thirteen actions reviewed by the Special Counsel. Mueller himself stopped short of announcing that the evidence amounts to probable cause but wrote: “If we had confidence after a thorough investigation of the facts that the president clearly did not commit obstruction of justice, we would so state.” [Volume II, Page 8]

1. Trump’s efforts to remove Special Counsel Mueller:

Yes: According to the Mueller report, “Substantial evidence indicates that the President’s attempts to remove the Special Counsel were linked to the Special Counsel’s oversight of investigations that involved the President’s conduct—and, most immediately, to reports that the President was being investigated for potential obstruction of justice.”

2. Trump’s efforts to curtail the Special Counsel’s investigation:

Yes: According to the Mueller report, “Substantial evidence indicates that the President’s efforts to have Sessions limit the scope of the Special Counsel’s investigation to future election interference was intended to prevent further investigative scrutiny of the President’s and his campaign’s conduct.”

3. Trump’s potential witness tampering regarding Manafort:

Yes: According to the Mueller report, “Evidence concerning the President’s conduct towards Manafort indicates that the President intended to encourage Manafort not to cooperate with the government.”

Mueller concluded “the President intended Manafort to believe that he could receive a pardon” in exchange for not cooperating with the investigation. “Evidence concerning the President’s conduct towards Manafort indicates that the President intended to encourage Manafort to not cooperate with the government. Before Manafort was convicted, the President repeatedly stated that Manafort had been treated unfairly . One day after Manafort was convicted on eight felony charges and potentially faced a lengthy prison term , the President said that Manafort was “a brave man ” for refusing to “break” and that “flipping” “almost ought to be outlawed.” At the same time, although the President had privately told aides he did not like Manafort, he publicly called Mana fort “a good man” and said he had a “wonderful family.” And when the President was asked whether he was considering a pardon for Manafort , the President did not respond directly and instead said he had “great respect for what [Manafort]’s done, in terms of what he’s gone through.” The President added that “so me of the charges they threw against him, every consultant, every lobbyist in Washington probably does.” In light of the President’s counsel’s previous statements that the investigations “might get cleaned up with some presidential pardons” and that a pardon would be possible if the President “come[s] to the conclusion that you have been treated unfairly,” the evidence supports the inference that the President intended Manafort to believe that he could receive a pardon, which would make cooperation with the government as a means of obtaining a lesser sentence unnecessary.” [Volume II, Page 132]

4. Trump’s potential witness tampering regarding Cohen:

Yes: According to the Mueller report, “[T]here is evidence that could support the inference that the President intended to discourage Cohen from cooperating with the government because Cohen’s information would shed adverse light on the President’s campaign-period conduct and statements.”

Mueller report: FBI finds Russian attempt to hack presidential election got into one Florida county

Actually it’s not the fecklessness of Republicans… it’s their willful denial of Russian interference that is the problem

We can support non-Republican candidates all we want, but if we cannot secure our election systems from meddling, we are screwed

(and by meddling — I mean disinformation, ballot hacking AND Republican voter suppression (under the guise of “patriotic security or religious freedom” — whichever they think they can get away with)

Mueller report: FBI finds Russian attempt to hack presidential election got into one Florida county system

Russian efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election included attempts to infiltrate Florida election offices’ computer systems — and the FBI concluded that the operation was successful and the intruders were able to “gain access to the network of at least one Florida county government.”

From the Mueller report (Page 29: “The Office identified dozens of U.S. rallies organized by the IRA (St. Petersburg-based Internet Research Agency). The earliest evidence of a rally was a 'confederate rally' in November 2015.”)

An Instagram post about a Confederate rally in Houston is cited in special counsel Robert Mueller’s redacted report as the “earliest evidence” of Russian influence in political rallies across the U.S.

The report also says: “The IRA (Internet Research Agency) continued to organize rallies even after the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The attendance at rallies varied. Some rallies appear to have drawn few (if any) participants, while others drew hundreds. The reach and success of these rallies was closely monitored.”

Striking footnote-Raises seriously the possibility of criminal liability when Trump leaves office

MUELLER, p. 390, footnote 1991: "A possible remedy through impeachment for abuses of power would not substitute for potential criminal liability after a President leaves office."
