Robert Gibbs: Darrell Issa made himself ‘the biggest joke in all of Washington’

Source: Raw Story

“Darrell Issa should call Jay Carney and apologize this morning,” Gibbs told MSNBC host Joe Scarborough on Monday. “He’s laying out the charge and then saying it might be true. And then he’s saying, ‘As the investigator, I know where I want to get, now I’m just getting around to proving it.’”

“I mean, it’s a stunning thing. It’s why five people in this town take Darrell Issa seriously. And it’s the surest bet that the Republicans are very much on the verge of overplaying their hand publicly and that the American people will lose interest in their side of this,” he added. “To throw around the words liar and perjury as easily as he did is shameful. And if he’s got information that these people lied, he should put it out there today.”

Co-host Mika Brzezinski pointed out that “Darrell Issa just kind of took it down to a level that makes us all just want to walk away and ignore it.”

“It shows how unserious he is about investigating anything,” Gibbs agreed. “The notion that he’s in charge of — quote — Government Oversight might now be the biggest joke in all of Washington.”

Large Group Of Mormons Joins Salt Lake City Gay Pride Parade

Source: Talking Points Memo

Some 400 people from the grassroots group Mormons Building Bridges marched under a banner reading “Family Reunion” in the annual parade in Salt Lake City.

Last year, their participation marked the first time such a large group of Mormons had joined the parade.

Mormons Building Bridges organizer Erika Munson told The Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/1aSR16q ) that the group and others have helped change public attitudes toward gay people. She notes bishops no longer excommunicate members who come out.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints still teaches its members that marriage is between a man and a woman, and that same-sex relationships are sinful. But the church recently launched a campaign encouraging members to be more compassionate toward gay and lesbian members of the church.

Markets Erode Moral Values

Markets Erode Moral Values
Researchers from the Universities of Bamberg and Bonn present causal evidence on how markets affect moral values

Many people express objections against child labor, exploitation of the workforce or meat production involving cruelty against animals. At the same time, however, people ignore their own moral standards when acting as market participants, searching for the cheapest electronics, fashion or food. Thus, markets reduce moral concerns. This is the main result of an experiment conducted by economists from the Universities of Bonn and Bamberg. The results are presented in the latest issue of the renowned journal “Science”.

Prof. Dr. Armin Falk from the University of Bonn and Prof. Dr. Nora Szech from the University of Bamberg, both economists, have shown in an experiment that markets erode moral concerns. In comparison to non-market decisions, moral standards are significantly lower if people participate in markets.

In markets, people ignore their individual moral standards

"Our results show that market participants violate their own moral standards," says Prof. Falk. In a number of different experiments, several hundred subjects were confronted with the moral decision between receiving a monetary amount and killing a mouse versus saving the life of a mouse and foregoing the monetary amount. "It is important to understand what role markets and other institutions play in moral decision making. This is a question economists have to deal with," says Prof. Szech.

The Geezers Are All Right - by Paul Krugman

The Geezers Are All Right

.....................

So what are we looking at here? The latest projections show the combined cost of Social Security and Medicare rising by a bit more than 3 percent of G.D.P. between now and 2035, and that number could easily come down with more effort on the health care front. Now, 3 percent of G.D.P. is a big number, but it’s not an economy-crushing number. The United States could, for example, close that gap entirely through tax increases, with no reduction in benefits at all, and still have one of the lowest overall tax rates in the advanced world.

But haven’t all the great and the good been telling us that Social Security and Medicare as we know them are unsustainable, that they must be totally revamped — and made much less generous? Why yes, they have; they’ve also been telling us that we must slash spending right away or we’ll face a Greek-style fiscal crisis. They were wrong about that, and they’re wrong about the longer run, too.

The truth is that the long-term outlook for Social Security and Medicare, while not great, actually isn’t all that bad. It’s time to stop obsessing about how we’ll pay benefits to retirees in 2035 and focus instead on how we’re going to provide jobs to unemployed Americans in the here and now.

Mail on Sunday's mysterious story of Downing Street love affair

The Mail on Sunday has published one of the most intriguing of splashes. On a day when the news agenda has been dominated by cash-for-questions newspaper stings (in The Sunday Telegraph and Sunday Times), the Mail's story has tended to pass under the radar.

But the mysterious tale, headlined "No 10 rocked by secret love affair", appears to have the potential to add to the prime minister's problems. It began:

"David Cameron has held crisis talks at Downing Street after being told of allegations of a sensational love affair which has potentially significant political implications for him.

For legal reasons, the Mail on Sunday cannot disclose the identities of the people involved or any details of the relationship – even its duration – other than that they are middle-aged figures. The affair has now concluded.

Far-Right Extremists Chased Through London by Women Dressed as Badgers

A rally by extremists from the British National Party and the English Defence League was dwarfed by opposition campaigners staging rival protests in London on Saturday 1 June.

................................

But in the event, both groups were upstaged by agitators of a different stripe. Decked out from head to toe in black and white, the group that won the day were campaigning neither for race war nor ethnic equality, but an end to the government's cull on badgers.

And it was the pro-badger campaigners who appeared to steal a march on the political activists.

Young women dressed in fake fur were seen chasing doughty nationalist supporters down London's Whitehall as a large number of security forces in iridescent jackets looked on from police lines.
