Matt Damon's "Promised Land"

Just saw it with most of our anti-fracking protest crew. Now I know why the newspaper panned the film: couldn't expect anything else from a paper that has become THE mouthpiece of the oilgas industry in these parts. In our county alone we're approaching 20K wells. If anything, the film is far too kind to the extractors. We're in deep trouble here. Deep.

National Day of Service -- we haz a tired!

Our local teams had quite a day!

We had crews at the Humane Society, at the homeless shelter, at the transitional housing facility, and at the battered women's shelter. We helped with grounds cleanup and a library project at one of our schools. We sorted donated clothing at the interfaith clothing bank, and helped sort and display merchandise at an ARC store. We cooked and delivered a meal to a disabled veteran and his wife, and painted the big room made available for public use at the UU Church. Our biggest team went to the food bank and stuffed 800 kids backpacks and assembled several hundred emergency food boxes.

We are tired. We are also exhilarated. On Monday we'll gather to watch and celebrate the inauguration. Then we'll meet to make plans for more local days of service.

Yes WE can. Yes WE did. Yes WE will.

Weld County vote against emergency contraception leaves patients looking elsewhere

Commissioners believe "morning after" pills cause abortions

A controversial and unreported move (emphasis added) by the Board of Weld County Commissioners to stop dispensing emergency contraception has forced low-income county health department patients to seek the drugs at the scant number of non-profit clinics in the area.

The Independent has learned that, in the summer of 2011, the commission’s five members decided that the so-called morning-after pill causes abortion and, for that reason, voted to stop providing it at the county’s two family-planning clinics.

The county commission is entirely Republican and has been for twenty years. One of these swine has indicated that he plans to join us in our Day of Service event. I really hope he does.

Congressional Democrats' hearing on gun violence on C-span

Compelling testimony, well worth watching.

(Democrats actually doing the peoples' work while the Republicans are in Virginia playing golf.)
