Chief Bigfoot's Band was intercepted by the 7th Calvary on this day in 1890

?

After the murder of Tantanka Iyotake (Sitting Bull) and after eluding Custer's old unit, the 7th Calvary, for 12 days a band of Minniconjou Lakota, led by Spotted Elk ( Chief Bigfoot) was intercepted along the western rim of Porcupine Creek on this day in 1890. They were escorted to and camped in a hollow a few miles south near the creek called Wounded Knee.
In the early morning hours on December 29th, 1890, the men
were assembled in a semi-circle formation in front of the tipis
and disarmed.
Yellow Bird, a holy man fearing for the lives of his people stood up and beseeched the Creator and asked for protection.
A shot rang out and the soldiers fired en masse into the sitting
Lakota men, killing most of them instantly. The horror was only
beginning.
The women and children ran as the soldiers chased them
down and killed them one by one. The slaughter continued
for over three hours. Some of the dead were found over three miles
from the campsite.
In vol.3, issue 1, "The Lakota Journal" listed the names of the Lakota
victims of the massacre at Wounded Knee. Four-hundred and five were listed as killed. Of this number, 69 were identified as infants or young children, 133 were identified as women, the remaining 203 were identified as men or had no gender or age identification. Of the total dead, 39 were identified as elders.
The bodies were left to freeze onto the prairie. Over the next three
days survivors and relatives recovered nearly half of the dead. On
the third day a government burial detail arrived to bury the remaining
victims. The bodies were stripped of valuables and dropped into a
mass grave.
A 40 year old, named Last Man, lay gutshot, frozen
to the ground until he was discovered on the 5th of January, 8 days
after the slaughter of December 29th. Last Man died at 8am on
January 6th, 1891.
The United States government awarded 23 Medals of Honor to
members of the Seventh Calvary for their service to the nation at this
place, the creek called Wounded Knee. 45).
Chief Bigfoot's body was scalped and the trophy was sent to
the Seventh Cavalry's museum in Massachusetts. There it remained
over the protests of Chief Bigfoot's family until the summer of 2000.
The last remains of Chief Bigfoot were returned to the place of his
birth, 109 years after his murder.

"I did not know then how much had ended. When I look back
from this high hill of my old age I can still see the butchered
women and children lying heaped and scattered all along the
crooked gulch as plain as when I saw them with eyes still young.
And I can see that something else died there in the bloody mud
and was buried in the blizzard. A peoples dream died there. It
was a beautiful dream....the nation's hoop is broken and scattered.
There is no center any longer and the sacred tree is dead."

Lost Bird was seven months old on December 29th, 1890, the day her mother was shot down at Cankpi Opi Wakpala, the creek called Wounded Knee. Four days after the massacre, Lost Bird was discovered under the frozen body of her mother by General Leonard Colby. Colby took the child for his own and raised Lost Bird in White society. Lost Bird suffered greatly during her life, searching for her identity, subjected to sexual abuse by an adopted cousin and raped and impregnated by Colby, her adoptive father.
She led a tragic life and died on Valentine's Day, 1919, in California. Lost Bird's remains were repatriated to the Wounded Knee Cemetery in 1991. Her life remains a powerful symbol and has become a rallying point for Native People attempting to re-connect to their culture and families the thousands of Native children and their descendants that were removed from their culture and adopted into non-Indian society.

Nelson Mandela at the Statue of Liberty

When Mom and Dad visited the Statue of Liberty, Nelson Mandela was also there. As he was escorted up the stairs by security Mom flashed him the peace sign. He smiled and peaced her back.

Martin Luther King was right when he said that the path of human progress curves toward justice. But it curves because good people like Nelson Mandela push it.

Republicans Save the Worst Insult for Last and Call JFK One of Their Own,-Tax Cuts and the Truth-

On the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy's death the right-wing is attempting to claim his legacy for their own. After excoriating President Kennedy as soft on communism and a socialist they now call him a conservative, the cruelest cut of all.
This is yet another example of un-Christian like Christian's calling non-communists communists. One of the biggest lies they tout is President Kennedy's tax cuts. Like all great lies it is wrapped in a kernel of truth. Kennedy did indeed cut taxes, but unlike tax give-a-ways to the filthy rich, President Kennedy's tax cuts were skewed heavily in favor of the working man. That's why they worked and "Trickle Down Economics" has never worked. Not once.

-clip- As the Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation explained at the time, the bottom 85% of the population received 59% of the benefits of JFK’s tax cut. The top 2.4% received 17.4% of the tax cut, and the top 0.4% received just 6% of it. Those on the right who see themselves as descendants of the Kennedy policy are either deeply confused or they assume you won’t bother to learn the truth. -end of clip-

"Filibuster" is an old Dutch word for "Free-booter or Pirate."

And that is exactly what the unprecedented Republican obstructionalism and massive abuse of that rule is, piracy. It is the theft of the treasure of democracy: civil discourse and deliberation.

The Senate should have dealt with these thieves the same way President Obama dealt with pirates, quickly and decisively.

Now let's get things moving.

?

Reccord filibuster abuse leads to worst reccord of Senate accomplishment. EVER. 2.8% of introduced bills passed.

A Letter From President Obama, on my father's death.

Dear Mike:

Thank you for the moving letter you sent this spring. I was touched by your words, and saddened to learn of the passing of your father, Patrick.
Stories like your father's remind me why I ran for this office in the first place, and I trust you take great pride in his legacy of service and in the values he passed on to you. Please know your message will remain in my thoughts, and I will not stop fighting to build a brighter future for our nation.

Sincerely,
Barack Obama

------------------my letter to President Obama 5/20/2013-------------------

Dear President Obama,
My father and I met you in July of 2004 at the Depue, Illinois VFW. It was just a few weeks after your address before the Democratic Convention. I was the last person in line to shake your hand after you had addressed the people gathered to meet you. I told you I was not sure you understood or were aware of the hope and promise that people saw in you. As you signed a copy of your convention speech that I had brought with me, I added, "Don't get the big head when you get to Washington, DC." You motioned to Michele and said, "She won't let me."
Neither of you have disappointed me. Both of you have inspired me as you have held your poise and grace in the face of vitriol most extreme and regrettable. But you should never lose sight of the fact that for every bitter voice there are many more that quietly admire and respect you.
My father passed over on March 3rd of this year. His last few years were a struggle. His last days were hard. As we talked the day before he passed into the Great Silence he told me he was glad he had lived long enough to see you re-elected. A life-long Democrat, a former precinct committeeman, he took great comfort knowing you were putting this nation back on the path of prosperity and respectibility. You gave my father something to smile about during his long goodbye. For that I am forever grateful.
Respectfully,
Mike Kohr

A SMILE
A smile is a very special thing. It costs nothing, but gives so much.
It creates happiness in the home. It fosters goodwill in business.
It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad.
It happens in a flash, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.
Yet it cannot be begged, bought, or stolen.
It is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away.
Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours.
For no one needs a smile as much as he who has no more to give.

My 401K is up 711%. It dropped in value 67% under Bush -updated 1/20/2015-

The Country is FAR better off, although you'd never know it from listening to the Republican leaders in Congress, Faux Gnus and even some here on this site.

The problem that remains is this is the recovery from the 2nd greatest economic collapse in history. It took over 4 years for FDR to end the Great Depression and unemployment did not drop to pre-depression levels until after WWII started. That's 11 years from the beginning of the Depression and a full 9 years after FDR, the most accomplished President in history, took office. And FDR had overwhelming numbers in both the Senate and House as well as an entire nation united behind him, sharply aware of the enormous failure of Hoover and his Republican allies.

If you want to avoid the long climb back from economic collapse quit electing the assholes that cause them:
-Republicans-

9 of the last 10 recessions occurred under Republican leadership as did all three of our greatest economic collapses: Hoover's Great Depression, Bush's Great Recession and the Reagan Recession of 1982.

Record Deficit Reduction and Strongest Job Growth in 8 years

?
Super Deficit Reducer
-President Obama-

You'd never know this fact if all you listened to was the Chicken Little, sky is falling crowd, of Faux Gnus. And if all you listened to was the Nixon aide, turned right-wing propaganda huckster, Roger Ailes's, fact free network, you certainly would not be aware that President Obama's deficit reduction results would be even greater if the obstructionist Congress would allow the President to remove the biggest single contributors to today's yearly deficits, namely the George W. Bush era tax give-a-ways to the rich.

?

Republicans ran the economy over a cliff, put in place spending and tax policies that exploded the debt, and then after America elected Barack Obama as President, engaged in unprecedented obstructionism all the while crying that President Obama is not fixing their catastrophic failures quickly enough.
Most amazing in all this, is that on a political level, the Republican Party and Faux Gnus has succeeded. Most Americans are not aware that President Obama's economic policies have actually shrunk the yearly deficit both in raw numbers, and in relation to GDP, the only true way to examine the size of the national debt from administration to administration.

?

?

In the fiscal year 2008-2009, the last year of George W. Bush's budgets, the yearly deficit was $1.4 trillion dollars. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) the upcoming 2014 deficit will : "shrink this year to $845 billion, or 5.3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), its smallest size since 2008."

Steve Benen of the Maddow Blog, notes that this is the fastest deficit reduction since the end of World War II and at the same time resulted in the strongest job creation in 8 years.

For the math impaired Republican Party and their hair on fire friends at Faux Gnus that is a reduction of $555 billion or a reduction of 40%. In raw numbers, -the misleading numbers that Faux Gnus uses- this is more deficit reduction than all other presidents in history combined.

Adversity presents opportunity, and President Obama, like every other Democratic President was presented with the opportunity to fix a failed economy from his Republican predecessor. President Obama has achieved historic accomplishment because in part he was presented with a a failure of epic proportions.

Republican criticism of the President is nothing more than they wishing to be the hero of their own self inflicted disaster.
