Not necessarily

Yes - our grandparents were staunch Republicans. But I know my grandfather started voting D when LBJ was up. That shift to solid D started in the 70's. There are still some in the solid R category - but lets face it . . . Allen West doesn't share the black elite background. Read the book Our Kind Of People by Lawrence Otis Graham. A family member of mine is quoted in there - and he shows the sharp difference between the African Methodist Church and the Evangelical Baptist Church goers in that book.

When I went to visit Spleman I rejected it as the upper classwoman I was tagged with were snotty and stuck up about two girls I befriended that weekend - one from the Bronx and one from Chicago. It was made very clear what was expected of legacy "ladies" and I was told what Sorority I wouldn't have to pledge. This was NOT my grandmother's S.C. It wasn't how I was raised.

I ended up at Niagara and it was a blessing. There I met the poor white girl from Appalachia, the 22 year old Freshman woman thr had grown up in Apartheid, the kids from 'da Bronx, the children of French Canadian immigrants etc etc. It was a blessing.

However - if the Democratic Party as represented at DU wants to piss on my back and tell me it's raining I'll start voting my economic interests. Leave poor minority folks behind, tell the LGBT community things aren't a big deal, tell women they are behaving hysterically - that's how you create sell outs.

It's what the Republican Party did in the sixtes, they doubled down when they got into bed with the likes of James Dobson and Gary Bauer in the 1980's and now we have one hell of a cultural war being instigated by the evangelical Right and they are gunning for the HBCUs.

It's funny - these two threads I read last night I read - what everyone has done for the black folks. Here's the thing about majority of the HBC's folks I know -

We have a stronger get down and kiss the ass of our ancestors mentality than we do the civil rights warriors.

My affluence as a single woman was directly related to efforts of my great grandfather - a child of Reconstruction who lived his entire life in rural Alabama and never had less than $100K in the bank - and my grandfather that except for his time in Atlanta at a HBC - lived in the same place and died with a net worth of $16 Million dollars.

Know what? They earned that. Without anyone's help and in spite of this rotten vicious country's treatment of them.

So before you throw around sell out - make sure you understand the "Our Kind Of People" subculture. The kind of people who give large sums to these schools and the UNCF because we KNOW that there but for the right womb went I.

Don't ever throw people like Allen West or Herman Cain or even Clarence Thomas in with people like my father (Tuskeegee) or my uncles (H and M respectively). Those aren't their kind of guys. They didn't have to be accepted by white elites because they were the black elites.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

Personal attack--"Do not fuck with me Manny. You really do not give a shit and that is apparent, Your words speak volumes."

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Sun May 11, 2014, 08:21 AM, and the Jury voted 1-6 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given

Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given

Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The OP's entire schtick depends on inflammatory statements designed to infuriate readers. This has been apparent for a long time. The current poster is simply calling him out for it, so Manny is simply reaping what he has sown.

Leave it.

Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This certainly doesn't rise to the level of insult that Manny has habitually directed. Live by the sword and all that. And anyhow, it's true.

Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: All sheshe is doing is letting Manny know she sees him for what he is. A former Republican that voted for Reagan and she's not buying his b.s. All this guy does is run around posting inflammatory things to fill his cup of value. He gets his value from antagonizing and getting people hidden at DU. Sheshe told him what's what and to get off her back.

That's not a personal attack. That's telling him - I'm not a wilting flower and I'm not going to just roll over and accept him as the alpha dog at DU.

Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given

Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

Welcome to DU

This:

Their scam relies upon creating a common enemy based upon the fear that the marks will lose something of great value to them to this common enemy.

I wish liberals/progressives at DU would step back and read that - as well as sheshe's bolded quotes elsewhere in this thread.

I posted a Jimmy Carter quote this past weekend that received many recs - and you are basically saying the same thing he has.

They prey on fear and the concept that "the other" has taken something from them.

What's the difference between my white husband and the average white male Republican? He looks at wealthier white men as either "marks" for his artwork and business or as impediments to his accumulation on wealth. He does not feel that way about any other group.

But then again we live in the tri state area and his business thrived during the downturn. Know why? 50 miles away in Manhattan the rich white guys on Wall Street went shopping. So did the guys in Red Bank, Princeton, the gold coast, Greenwich etc etc.

Those same guys laugh at the under employed guy in a square state just getting by that turns around and votes for someone like Romney.

We on our side must go TOWARDS that. We cannot continue to run away from their tactic of the "other" anymore.

Pres Jimmy Carter: Why a generation of white men have solidly embraced the GOP

https://thegrio.com/2014/04/11/jimmy-carter-race-motivates-white-men-to-vote-republican/

And in a no holds barred interview with Salon, the “Man from Plains” spoke plainly about why a generation of white men have solidly embraced the Republican party in multiple elections.

“It’s race. That’s been prevalent in the South…. Ever since Nixon ran — and ever since Johnson didn’t campaign in the deep South, the Republicans have solidified their hold there,” he said.

Carter also said that GOP attacks on programs like food stamps have a coded appeal for the wealthy.

“Those kind of things just exalt the higher class, which is the whites, and they draw a subtle, but very effective racial line throughout the South,” Carter said.

Michael Eric Dyson to Cornel West: You ain’t that important

http://rollingout.com/politics/michael-eric-dyson-blasts-cornel-west-aint-important/#_

I’ve probably known him longer than anybody on this panel. Hung out with him,” Dyson said. “I’ve been a victim of his vicious assaults in public. I’ve held my powder. That ain’t my usual nature. [Dr. Farah Griffin] called me up and I listened to Farah. Because she loves us both [and was] trying to negotiate a cease of hostilities. But I’m not going to pretend that it doesn’t hurt for you to call me a sellout because I disagree with you. You can be ‘ride-or-die,’ but while you’re riding — see who your vehicle is rolling over.”

Dr. Dyson voiced his belief that Dr. West’s criticisms of President Obama stem from his personal vendetta against the president after West felt that he had been “snubbed.” Dr. West did not receive an invitation to Obama’s 2013 inauguration after attending the president’s first inauguration in 2009. One of West’s major criticisms has centered on his belief that the White House is not providing access to those working for civic and legislative causes.

“With [former President] Bill Clinton, you’re rhapsodizing about access [to the White House] — if access is a problem, it was a problem then. Not because you didn’t get a ticket to go to the inauguration for Obama!” Dr. Dyson stated emphatically. “I’m not talking about just [West], he ain’t the only one. But since he’s been public about it, here’s my response to [his criticism]: I love you, but you can’t talk about love and act unlovingly. It’s the personal assault on Obama that I found problematic, not the principled critique. I’m not mad at principled critique, but you still could be wrong. But when you start indicting my soul like I’ve given my soul over to Obama or the devil — now you’re tripping. You ain’t that important. You’re not God to be able to leverage the divine assignment of privilege or punishment.”

Number23 - where are you?

And with that - Good for Mr. Dyson. He is handling West very well.

And well - West comes from a place of god/spirituality and Dyson comes from a place of reason and logic.

I could see where bringing Dyson's soul into things probably really pissed Dyson off.

Race Based Violence? Or not? You Tell Me

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/04/07/mi-men-arrested-for-viciously-beating-army-veteran-they-considered-a-ngger-lover/

Police in Michigan arrested three men who are accused of viciously beating an Army veteran who objected to their racist remarks.

According to the Westland Police Department, United States Army veteran Adam Wagner went to a 7-11 convenience store at 2 a.m. Saturday morning to purchase a pack of cigarettes. Once inside, he noticed three men harassing the female clerk, and he told them to stop.

When he walked outside, the trio followed him. At this point, Wagner told police, they noticed the Army insignia on Wagner’s car and began to taunt him about the military.

“They were saying, ‘How can you be in the military when they let black people in the military?’ They used the ‘n word’, saying [he] was an ‘n-word’ lover,” Wagner’s girlfriend told WJBK.

“I took pretty, pretty good offense to that because my best friend in the army was black. He saved my life,” Wagner added.

The suspects — all of whom had shaved heads — then began to assault Wagner, punching and kicking him until he was on the ground.

Detroit Free Press Article -

The men followed the victim outside to the parking lot. The suspects noticed military insignias on the victim’s car and then began to make insulting remarks about him and the U.S. military, Jedrusik said. They began punching and kicking him.

The attackers fled on foot. The victim followed them while trying to call police, but the attackers beat him up once more, knocking him to the ground, punching and kicking him again, said police.

“They beat the heck out of him,” Jedrusik said. “They beat him pretty bad.”

They suspects may have been “either intoxicated or just causing trouble,” he said.

The victim got help from a resident who called the police. Paramedics took him to a hospital and he was released later. He suffered lacerations to his face and mouth, head injuries and a broken nose.

Just a couple of drunks out for a good time? Or racially motivated because he served in a military that allows black people to serve in it?

Maybe they felt threatened because they heard a rap song once? Maybe he bought skittles? Maybe because he laid down in the fetal position on cement/blacktop he was going to use the ground as a weapon?

I'd like to wait and hear the facts

Before we jump to conclusions.

Could it have been a hate crime? Sure.

Could it have been racial prejudice? Sure.

But I would hope the same folks who were wait and see about Zimmerman will give the folks in this scenario the same benefit of the doubt they did Zimmerman. Let's Let the justice system do its job. I mean - It is flawless doncha know?

And if these guys have a good lawyer who makes the point the man was armed with a truck and was driving while white in a black neighborhood and they get off/walk - that I will see oodles of threads and posts about how justice was served.

OP - edit your post to read Dominant Culture and Racial Prejudice and you will get entirely different responses. The way you have framed the discussion raises the hackles of the average white guy in America with a professional victim mentality.
