The former chairman of the Republican Party of Florida is headed to trial on fraud, theft and money laundering

The former chairman of the Republican Party of Florida is headed to trial on fraud, theft and money laundering charges in a case fraught with embarrassment for the party over allegations of lavish spending and questionable behavior.

Jury selection was set to start Monday in the two-week trial. Testimony could cover allegations of prostitutes at a party fundraiser in the Bahamas, spending on fancy restaurants and luxury hotels by state GOP leaders, criminal charges of party money funneled to a private company controlled by Greer and party leaders stabbing each other in the back.

Jurors will have to decide if Greer committed a crime when he channeled more than $200,000 of party money to his company, or whether the charges are revenge for the waning popularity of his political patron, former Gov. Charlie Crist. Crist defected from the Republican Party to run as an independent for the U.S. Senate and is now a Democrat.

Rand Paul Says Ashley Judd is Attractive, Articulate and Doesn’t Represent Kentucky

Tea Party representative Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) was on CNN’s State of the Union this morning in an attempt to establish his SOTU address pre-buttal narrative. Asked about the negative ads running against Ashley Judd, Mitch McConnell’s potential 2014 opponent in Kentucky, Rand Paul said she was attractive, articulate and and doesn’t represent Kentucky.

Asked about Karl Rove’s negative ads against Judd in Kentucky, Rand said, “Part of politics is making sure people know about who you are running against. Ashley Judd’s a famous actress, she’s an attractive woman, and presents herself well, and from what I understand, is articulate. But the thing is, she doesn’t really represent Kentucky.”

I guess Rand’s Kentucky doesn’t want to be represented by an attractive, articulate woman. Or maybe it’s that Rove’s GOP PAC Crossroads painted Judd out to be a radical liberal from Tennessee who loves ObamaCare because you should really “know” who is a Muslim Kenyan socialist without a birth certificate, rather than focusing on the people who are still clinging to the Affordable Care Act as a get out the vote tool even though they know they can’t overturn it. After all, the last thing Republicans can afford is to have actual policy discussions with voters.

Rand also offered up his peculiar brand of Tea humor, “When I heard Ashley Judd might run for office I thought maybe it was Parliament since she lives in Scotland half the year.” Oh, European boogeywoman! Good one, Senator.

I really don't have to explain this do I/

John Yoo: The Real Problem with Assassinating U.S. Citizens? We Can’t Torture Them ... Not the onion

John Yoo, George W. Bush’s Assistant US Attorney General in the Office of Legal Counsel, has a real problem with Obama’s use of drones. But his problem isn’t that Obama claims the right to kill U.S. citizens without charge or trial—it’s that we can’t capture and torture them without charge or trial.

This is a terrifying example of how the extreme militarist fanatics on the right can make Obama’s most damaging Constitutional precedent look benign, and, in the process, put the left in the position of defending him. “Rather than capture terrorists—which produces the most valuable intelligence on al Qaeda—Mr. Obama has relied almost exclusively on drone attacks,” he wrote in The Wall Street Journal today.

13th-century 'travel guide' for Vikings heading to Scotland

The chronicles have been interpreted by Gisli Sigurdsson, a historian at Reykjavik University, who believes the sagas - part fiction, part fact - reveal how the ancient Norse were far from the fearless pirates of legend.
Sigurdsson said the tales were a warning to travellers that they would encounter a general foggy area, dangerous landings, hostile natives and language problems. They wrote that the people would probably attack you immediately.

A new historical study gleaned the information from stories that filtered back from travelling Vikings and were written on yellowed calf vellum eight centuries ago.
The stories paint a picture of a dangerous country but claim Orkney and Shetland offer a friendlier welcome.
'Icelanders who want to practise robbery are advised to go there,' says one saga. 'But it may cost them their life.'
Another tale tells the story of Icelandic merchants who sailed into a west coast sea loch where they met 13 ships bristling with angry natives.

Fox News Claims Solar Won't Work in America Because It's Not Sunny Like Germany

Ah, the Sun baked beaches of Germany in the dead of winter, where southern europeans go in winter.

Thanks to Fox News and its expert commentators, millions of Americans now understand the real, hidden reason why Germany's solar-energy industry is so much further along than ours. Turns out it has nothing to do with the fact that Germany's government has long supported the industry far more generously, with policies like feed-in tariffs that stimulate investment in green technologies. No, the real reason is much simpler, explained a trio of journalists on Fox & Friends: It's always sunny in Germany!

"The industry's future looks dim," intoned host Gretchen Carlson at the beginning of the segment, which was preserved for posterity by the liberal blog Media Matters for America. She and her co-host went on to ridicule Obama's "failed" solar subsidies, adding, "The United States simply hasn't figured out how to do solar cheaply and effectively. You look at the country of Germany, it's working out great for them." Near the end of the segment, it occurred to Carlson to ask her expert guest, Fox Business reporter Shibani Joshi, why it might be that Germany's solar-power sector is doing so much better. "What was Germany doing correct? Are they just a smaller country, and that made it more feasible?" Carlson asked.

Joshi's jaw-dropping response: "They're a smaller country, and they've got lots of sun. Right? They've got a lot more sun than we do." In case that wasn't clear enough for some viewers, Joshi went on: "The problem is it's a cloudy day and it's raining, you're not gonna have it." Sure, California might get sun now and then, Joshi conceded, "but here on the East Coast, it's just not going to work'

Washington State gets tons more sun than Germany. Germany is around Hudson's Bay Latitude
