New Yorker cover, "Election Results," by Kadir Nelson:

We’re near the close of a year that hosted a global pandemic, a spate of wildfires, a national movement for racial justice, and perhaps the most dreaded election in memory. But Kadir Nelson captures, in his latest cover, some of the hope that has crept onto the scene. We recently spoke to the artist about the image and his dreams for the future.

You paint some scenes with multiple characters and others, like this one, with lone figures. What are the constraints when an image is built on just one character?

What’s most important is communicating the feeling behind the image, and, in this instance, less is more. The sole figure forces the viewer to focus on the idea that I’m trying to convey. That idea is about hope and promise, but it’s also about work—the work it took to achieve the results of this election, and the work we’ll have to do in the months and years to come. The blue iris flower in the girl’s hair represents hope, and her rolled-up sleeves gesture to the work that needs to be done.

You use the same medium, oil paint, that painters have used for centuries. Which era in art history most inspires you? And why do you draw from classical paintings, rather than from more contemporary sources?

I’m very inspired by art from ancient Egypt, the Renaissance, and the early-twentieth-century period in Europe and America. I’m interested in symbolism and fine craftsmanship, which is perhaps why I gravitate toward the classic. But I’m eager to see where contemporary art will go, as so many new artists are coming of age during these challenging times.

Moderna's coronavirus vaccine found to be nearly 95 percent effective in a preliminary analysis

Source: Washington Post

Biotechnology firm Moderna announced Monday that a preliminary analysis shows its experimental coronavirus vaccine is nearly 95 percent effective at preventing illness, including severe cases — a striking initial result that leaves the United States with the prospect that two coronavirus vaccines could be available on a limited basis by the end of the year.

The news comes a week after pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech lifted the stock market and people’s hopes with the news that their coronavirus vaccine was more than 90 percent effective.

“It’s extremely good news. If you look at the data, the numbers speak for themselves,” said Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who was one of three people briefed on the data by an independent committee Sunday morning. “I describe myself as a realist, but I’m fundamentally a cautious optimist. I felt we’d likely get something less than this. … I said certainly a 90-plus-percent effective vaccine is possible, but I wasn’t counting on it.”

Moderna’s vaccine, co-developed with Fauci’s institute, is being tested in 30,000 people. Half received two doses of the vaccine, and half received a placebo. To test how well the vaccine works, physicians closely monitored cases of covid-19 to see whether they predominantly occurred in people who received the placebo group.

Republican convicted of election fraud helps lead Trump rally baselessly claiming election fraud

...

One of the speakers is blogger and GOP activist Brandon Hall, who says he’s running for Michigan Republican Party chair. That position is currently held by former state Rep. Laura Cox (R-Livonia), who Trump announced at a pre-election rally in Grand Rapids would “be fired” if he lost the state, which he did. Cox has continued to defend the president and make unfounded claims of voter fraud after the election.

“We’re not going to give over our electoral votes to Joe Biden without a fight,” Hall said, as reported by the Lansing State Journal.

What Hall didn’t mention, and neither did the story, is that he has firsthand experience with election fraud. In 2013, Hall was charged with 10 counts of election law forgery, which is a felony. In December 2016, Hall was sentenced to 30 days in jail and 18 months probation for election fraud, the Grand Haven Tribune, FOX-17 and MLive reported.

Hall has been involved with various efforts this year blasting Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s orders to stop the spread of COVID-19. The GOP-majority Michigan Supreme Court in October overturned the 1945 law many orders were based upon.

The Twit tweets: "He won..."

He won because the Election was Rigged. NO VOTE WATCHERS OR OBSERVERS allowed, vote tabulated by a Radical Left privately owned company, Dominion, with a bad reputation & bum equipment that couldn’t even qualify for Texas (which I won by a lot!), the Fake & Silent Media, & more!

let's un-Fox this tweet:
— there is no evidence to support your claims of fraud
— your own lawyers admitted this to more than one judge
— you keep losing lawsuit after lawsuit
— your lawyers have quit
— and all you have left is Rudy Shirt-Tucking Colludy
— you lost
— get over it
