Bernie Sanders to Rally With Striking Kellogg Workers Friday

Senator Bernie Sanders plans to rally with striking Kellogg Co. workers in Michigan Friday, highlighting an issue that also has drawn the attention of President Joe Biden.

Sanders, a former Democratic presidential candidate, heads to Battle Creek after Kellogg said last month it was planning to hire replacement workers “where appropriate.” The labor impasse has persisted since early October.

“Kellogg’s workers made the company billions during a pandemic by working 12-hour shifts, some for more than 100 days in a row,” Sanders said in a tweet Tuesday. The company is “now choosing corporate greed over the workers they once called ‘heroes’.”

Feminist retelling of Nineteen Eighty-Four approved by Orwell's estate

The estate of George Orwell has approved a feminist retelling of Nineteen Eighty-Four, which reimagines the story from the perspective of Winston Smith’s lover Julia.

Opening with one of literature’s most famous lines – “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen” – Orwell’s 1949 novel is set in a dystopian future where Great Britain, known as Airstrip One, is part of the totalitarian state of Oceania. Big Brother rules supreme and the Thought Police stamp out any individual thinking. Winston Smith works at The Ministry of Truth, rewriting history to suit Big Brother’s narrative. He starts a forbidden affair with Julia – who works on the novel-writing machines in the Fiction Department - until both are captured and sent for re-education via Room 101.

In Julia by Sandra Newman, the incidents of Nineteen Eighty-Four are seen through the woman’s eyes. “It was the man from Records who began it, him all unknowing in his prim, grim way, his above-it-all oldthink way. He was the one Syme called ‘Old Misery’,” writes Newman. “Comrade Smith was his right name, though ‘Comrade’ never suited him somehow. Of course, if you felt foolish calling someone ‘Comrade’, far better not to speak to them at all.”

Publisher Granta said that Julia understands the world of Oceania “far better than Winston and is essentially happy with her life”. As Orwell puts it in Nineteen Eighty-Four, “in some ways she was far more acute than Winston, and far less susceptible to Party propaganda … She also stirred a sort of envy in him by telling him that during the Two Minutes Hate her great difficulty was to avoid bursting out laughing. But she only questioned the teachings of the Party when they in some way touched upon her own life. Often she was ready to accept the official mythology, simply because the difference between truth and falsehood did not seem important to her.”

“She has known no other world and, until she meets Winston, never imagined one. She’s opportunistic, believing in nothing and caring not at all about politics. She routinely breaks the rules but also collaborates with the regime whenever necessary. She’s an ideal citizen of Oceania,” said Granta. “But when one day, finding herself walking toward Winston Smith in a long corridor, she impulsively hands him a note – a potentially suicidal gesture – she comes to realise that she’s losing her grip and can no longer safely navigate her world.”

The Livingston County Sheriff Department has filed a criminal complaint against me related to..

The Livingston County Sheriff Department has filed a criminal complaint against me related to the Twitter posts I made this week about the nurses who publicly spread health misinformation. (THREAD)

I was contacted by a sheriff’s deputy this afternoon to notify of the charges pursuant to this Michigan statute: http://legislature.mi.gov/(S(oyqxnnllpevhowoef3qicfl5))/mileg.aspx?page=GetObject&objectname=mcl-750-411s

I do not yet have a copy of the report so I can’t comment further regarding n the details at this time, but it is a felony if charged and convicted. The case has been forwarded to the Livingston County Prosecutor’s office for review I am told.

The posts I have made about these nurses and about my local chapter of Moms for Liberty pertain to their public activism of their “movement” (their word) made in public social media posts and public government meetings.

At no point have I attempted to contact or encouraged others to contact any of the parties involved. I have not approached any of these folks when in a public setting. I have not shared any private information that was not included in their already public posts.

Frankly I am shocked the LCSD would play a role in this naked attempt to undermine my free speech rights guaranteed by the #FirstAmendment Flag of United States and silence dissenters of life threatening public policy measures during a deadly pandemic. Updates to follow!

Two Jan. 6 Organizers Are Coming Forward and Naming Names: 'We're Turning It All Over'

After losing faith in Trump, the pair plan to hand over text messages, Instagram direct messages, and other documents related to the planning of the Jan. 6 rally on the Ellipse where Trump spoke

Two key organizers of the main Jan. 6 rally in Washington, D.C. are coming in from the cold.

Dustin Stockton and Jennifer Lynn Lawrence are set to testify next week before the House select committee investigating the attack on the U.S. Capitol. The pair will deliver testimony and turn over documents, including text messages, that indicate the extensive involvement members of Congress and the Trump administration had in planning the House challenge to certifying Biden’s election and rally near the White House where Donald Trump spoke — efforts that ultimately contributed to a massive and violent attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Among the documents the couple is providing are conversations they had with staffers and members of Congress as they planned the main rally that took place on the White House Ellipse that day. Stockton described these discussions as largely logistical and focused on planning the members’ participation in objections to the electoral certification on the House floor and various events that were staged to protest against the election. They include Instagram messages Lawrence exchanged with Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) as she tried to get him to speak at the Ellipse rally. Cawthorn, whose office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, ultimately appeared on stage at that event.

“We’re turning it all over and we’ll let the cards fall where they may,” Stockton says.

Jan. 6 panel votes to hold Meadows in contempt, sending a criminal referral to House

Source: NPR

The Democratic-led House select committee investigating the Capitol attack voted to hold Mark Meadows in criminal contempt of Congress, sending to the full House a referral for the former Trump White House chief of staff to face a criminal charge.

The Monday night vote was months in the making. Meadows had engaged the panel in talks for weeks and initially cooperated by turning over thousands of documents. However, he reversed course last week, canceling a day before he was due to appear for a deposition and said he would stop cooperating.

The nine-member committee, made up of seven Democrats and two Republicans, voted unanimously in favor of the referral.

"It comes down to this: Mr. Meadows started by doing the right thing — cooperating. He handed over records that he didn't try to shield behind some excuse. But in an investigation like ours, that's just a first step," Committee Chair Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., said in remarks ahead of the vote. "When the records raise questions — as these most certainly do — you have to come in and answer those questions. And when it was time for him to follow the law, come in, and testify on those questions, he changed his mind and told us to pound sand. He didn't even show up."

Time Person of the Year: Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, named most influential of 2021

Source: CNN

New York (CNN Business)Time magazine has named CEO of Tesla and SpaceX Elon Musk as Person of the Year.

"Person of the Year is a marker of influence, and few individuals have had more influence than Musk on life on Earth, and potentially life off Earth too," Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal wrote. "In 2021, Musk emerged not just as the world's richest person but also as perhaps the richest example of a massive shift in our society."

This tradition from Time began in 1927 as "Man of the Year" and has since changed to not only recognize an individual, but also to consider the impact of a group, movement or idea that had the most influence in the past year. In 2020, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were picked together as of Person of the Year. The annual choice is not necessarily considered an honor, since the selection could have wielded negative influence. For example, Adolf Hitler was named Man of the Year in 1938.

Time also has evolved the tradition into a larger franchise by introducing additional categories in 2019. This year, pop star Olivia Rodrigo was named Artist of the Year and four-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles was selected as Athlete of the Year. The title of Heroes of the Year, previously known as "Guardians," went to the scientists behind the mRNA covid-19 vaccine specifically Katalin Kariko, Barney Graham, Kizzmekia Corbett and Drew Weissman.
