Hundreds 'plank like RBG' outside Supreme Court to celebrate Ginsburg's birthday

Hundreds of people marked Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's 86th birthday on Friday by channeling her workout routine outside of the Supreme Court.

The #PlankLikeRBG trend is believed to have started with a Facebook group called "Plank Like RBG 86th Birthday Celebration at Supreme Court."

More than 500 people indicated they planned to go to the event at the Supreme Court, and many others posted that they would plank at home or at their place of work.

Many gathered for a giant group plank, but throughout the entirety of the day, reporters estimated hundreds came by and planked outside the Supreme Court to share their birthday wishes.

FBI seeing uptick in domestic terror arrests

Source: CNN

(CNN)There is an uptick in US domestic terror arrests, according to a senior FBI official, who says that with nearly 25 arrests in the first quarter of fiscal year 2019, it's one of the "highest arrest tempo quarters in the last few years" related to domestic terrorism.

The domestic terror arrests include but are not limited to far right/white nationalists, the official said.

The FBI has approximately 900 open domestic terror investigations, the official added. These are separate from international terrorism investigations that, for example, involve plots related to ISIS and al Qaeda, including so-called "lone wolf attacks."

Notably, there are not domestic terror statutes in the US that allow for specific domestic terror charges. Prosecutors use other violations -- such as of weapons possession laws -- to charge people accused of plotting domestic terror attacks. Recently, a Coast Guard officer accused of seeking to kill politicians and journalists was charged with firearms and drug violations. And last year, a man espousing anti-Semitic views opened fire on a synagogue in Pittsburgh.

New Zealand shooter called Donald Trump 'a symbol of white identity' as he murdered 49 people

...

Which is no coincidence. As part of his rant, the livestreaming shooter called Donald Trump a “symbol of white identity and common purpose."

In a manifesto posted to social media (deliberately not linked), the New Zealand shooter frames his motivations around “replacement”—the same term invoked by the Nazi marchers at Charlottesville that Trump described as “good people.” The shooter went on to call immigration “white genocide.”

Despite the location of the shooting, the United States is at the center of the manifesto. The shooter spends a great deal of his 74 pages talking about “threats to the electoral college” and his desire to “end the melting pot” by “balkanizing” the United States “along political, cultural and, most importantly, racial lines.” In his rant, he repeats phrases and themes from both Trump and American white nationalists, focusing on the Second Amendment as a primary divide in American culture. The shooter also throws out other familiar right-wing phrases, from his concern that “taxation is theft” to his discussion of “demographic change” in Texas that will lead whites to start a civil war.

There is also a section on how to deal with immigration that seems to come from the Trump playbook: “Few parents, regardless of circumstance, will [be] willing to risk the lives of their children, no matter the economic incentives. Therefore, once we show them the risk of bringing their offspring to our soil, they will avoid our lands.” One whole section of the manifesto is titled “Diversity is weakness.”

The theme of dividing the U.S. along racial lines reoccurs repeatedly in the manifesto. The shooter states that he deliberately chose to use firearms rather than bombs specifically to create more anger over gun violence in hopes of spurring the fight over the Second Amendment and driving a wedge through America.

The New Zealand massacre was livestreamed on Facebook, announced on 8chan, reposted on YouTube, commentated about on Reddit, and mirrored around the world before the tech companies could even react.

What responsibility do we want these companies to have? On Reddit, one of the most popular sites on the Internet, people have been narrating the video on a forum called "watchpeopledie." After more than an hour, this was posted:

Ex-White House ethics chief compares Ivanka, Kushner security clearances to college admissions...

Former White House ethics chief Walter Shaub on Thursday said there was “quite the parallel” between President Trump’s children getting high-level security clearances and the dozens of parents caught in a national college admissions cheating scandal.

Shaub said Trump’s alleged role in getting his daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner security clearances was on par with the allegations that wealthy parents, as well as school coaches and administrators, engaged in a bribery scam to ensure college admissions for their children.

“Quite the parallel between members of the decadent golf set cheating to get their kids into college and a decadent golf setter cheating to get his daughter and son-in-law clearances after committing nepotism to get them civil service jobs – except for the national security risks,” Shaub tweeted.

Graham blocks resolution calling for Mueller report to be made public

Source: The Hill

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Thursday blocked a resolution calling on special counsel Robert Mueller's report to be made public after it passed the House unanimously.

Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) asked for unanimous consent for the nonbinding resolution, which cleared the House 420-0, to be passed by the Senate before they leave town for a week-long recess.

"There is no good reason, no good reason that the special counsel's report should not be made public. The American people are overwhelmingly for the report being made public. They have a right to see it. No one should stand in the way of that," Schumer said from the Senate floor.

But Graham, a close ally of Trump's who chairs the Judiciary Committee, objected after Schumer refused to amend the House-passed resolution to include a provision calling on the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to investigate DOJ misconduct in the handling of the Clinton email investigation and the Carter Page FISA applications.

Beto O'Rourke has what many female candidates don't: a partner who takes the lead on child care

The newly minted presidential candidate says he “sometimes” helps with his kids.

Beto O’Rourke, the former Texas senatorial candidate who announced his run for president on Thursday, has three children. Sometimes, he even takes care of them.

The issue of his family came to the fore on Thursday when O’Rourke told a crowd that his wife, Amy Sanders O’Rourke, was raising their kids “sometimes with my help.”

Beto tells a coffee shop crowd that he just talked with his wife, Amy. “She is raising, sometimes with my help,” their three kids. Then says he’s running for president for his kids, and theirs.
— Matt Viser (@mviser) March 14, 2019

The comment, some said, was meant as self-deprecation and an acknowledgment of the hard work Amy O’Rourke did for their family. But despite his intentions, Beto O’Rourke revealed a fundamental inequality of American life: While men throughout history have been able to rely on their wives to provide child care while they fulfill their political ambitions, women have rarely been able to count on partners to do the same. And as New York Magazine writer Rebecca Traister pointed out, a woman who joked about being a part-time parent while on the campaign trail would be harshly criticized — and might find her political career over before it began.

O'Malley endorses O'Rourke for president

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) gave his endorsement to Beto O’Rourke (D) just hours after the former congressman announced he was running for president.

O’Malley, once thought of as a possible candidate himself, said he was “all in” for O’Rourke in a post on Twitter Thursday.

“We’re all in for Beto here in Maryland and I look forward to doing everything in my power to help him beat Donald Trump,” he wrote.

Trump to Breitbart on how the left plays tough: "I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump — I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough — until they go to a certain point and then it would be very bad, very bad."
