Chinese Bank Offered Clients Chance to Dine With Trump for $150,000

Source: Bloomberg

China’s second-largest state-owned bank offered wealthy clients the opportunity to have dinner with the American president for $150,000 a ticket, spurring a complaint from Donald Trump’s re-election campaign to the U.S. Department of Justice.

A branch of China Construction Bank Corp. invited high-net-worth clients willing to pay the ticket price to a May 31 dinner in Dallas, according to an invitation seen by Bloomberg News and confirmed with bank staff. Chinese participants would have the opportunity to communicate with U.S. “tycoons,” take photos with Trump and get his autograph, according to the invitation.

While Trump was expected to host a $50,000-a-head fund-raising dinner with the Republican National Committee in Dallas that night, it’s illegal for U.S. political campaigns to accept donations from foreign nationals or from corporations. That means only the Chinese bank’s customers with U.S. passports would be eligible to attend.

Officials with Trump’s campaign and the RNC said they had no knowledge of the Chinese bank’s advertisement before Bloomberg News asked about it. The campaign alerted U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ office about the solicitation, said a person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing a potential law enforcement matter.

Maggi Hambling picked to create Mary Wollstonecraft statue

Source: The Guardian

The pioneering British artist Maggi Hambling has been chosen for a long-awaited statue commemorating the “foremother of feminism” Mary Wollstonecraft.

The Mary on the Green campaign, which has been calling for a permanent memorial to the philosopher and author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman since 2011, unanimously chose Hambling for the sculpture.

Jude Kelly, patron for the campaign and artistic director of the Southbank Centre, called Hambling, who is best known for a sculpture of Oscar Wilde in Covent Garden, “a modern legend”.

She added: “[She] is a wonderful choice to capture the spirit and strength of Wollstonecraft.”

Heartwarming (but I also hope the pet parents learned a lesson, as well).

YouTube removes Georgia GOP candidate's "deportation bus" video for hate speech

Source: Vice

YouTube has removed a video touting Georgia GOP gubernatorial candidate Michael Williams’ “deportation bus” for violating its hate speech standards.

Williams, a Republican state senator who is polling in the low single digits in the state’s gubernatorial race, posted the minute-long advertisement to YouTube on Tuesday showing off the “deportation bus” he will take around the state in hopes of appealing to anti-immigration voters.

Williams’ tour will drive the “deportation bus” around Georgia’s sanctuary communities, DeKalb and Clayton counties.

“It’s not going to be one of those pansy, political bus tours,” Williams promises.

Mackinac Island named the No. 1 summer destination in America

Source: Freep

You already knew. Now everybody else knows.

The vacation planning website TripAdvisor just named Mackinac Island the No. 1 summer travel destination in America for 2018.

That's ahead of the likes of Martha's Vineyard (Mass.), Jackson Hole (Wyo.), Lake George (N.Y.) and Ocean City (Md.).

"This charming island is a throwback to old-timey seaside leisure with the candy-colored facades of downtown shops," TripAdvisor says. "Mackinac is world-famous for its homemade fudge and travelers can work off sugar highs by exploring the limestone bluffs of Mackinac Island State Park."
