Ivanka Trump Touts Hire American Program As Mar-a-Lago Seeks to Recruit More Foreign Workers

Source: Newsweek

Ivanka Trump has touted a new initiative from the Trump administration to employ more Americans, just days after the president’s Mar-

The first daughter and senior White House adviser in an op-ed published in The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday promoted an initiative the White House is launching Thursday furthering a campaign promise to “hire American.”

“In launching a National Workforce Strategy @realDonaldTrump and this Admin are working to fill vacant American jobs with American workers; many of whom have been on the sidelines of our economy & deserve an opportunity to work + thrive,” she tweeted on Wednesday with a link to her piece.

President Donald Trump will sign an executive order “to prioritize and expand workforce development so that we can create and fill American jobs with American workers,” his daughter wrote in her op-ed.

Alabama officers suspended for alleged 'white power' gesture

An Alabama mayor says four members of his city's police force have been suspended for making a hand gesture some say is a hate symbol.

Jasper Mayor David O'Mary tells news outlets the four Jasper officers have been suspended and will lose a week's pay following the publication of a photograph in the Jasper Daily Mountain Eagle on July 12. O'Mary is pictured in that photo alongside several officers, four of whom are making an upside-down "OK" sign with their fingers. He says some have claimed the gesture is meant to express "white power."

The mayor says he arranged that photo to recognize the narcotics team following a drug bust. He says he hasn't asked the officers what they meant by the gesture, but says they showed "poor judgment."

Bill Schuette Says He Would Ban Abortion in Michigan if Roe v. Wade is Overturned

New reporting from Politico today is revealing that Bill Schuette is planning to ban safe and legal access to abortion as governor in Michigan if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Politico reports that:

“In an interview, Schuette spokesman John Selleck said the Republican ‘is 100 percent pro-life’ and that as governor he would enforce Michigan laws including the pre-Roe abortion ban.”

This comes as Bill Schuette has continued to tout Donald Trump’s extreme nomination for the Supreme Court of the United States, which threatens Roe v. Wade, among other generations of progress on healthcare, voting rights, and civil rights.

“These new comments from Bill Schuette are deeply alarming and make absolutely clear that women’s fundamental freedoms to make decisions about their bodies are at risk,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Brandon Dillon. “We must elect a new, Democratic governor who will be a rock-solid line of defense when Donald Trump’s terrible decisions and policies threaten Michigan families.”

Japan, EU sign trade deal to eliminate nearly all tariffs

Source: AP

TOKYO (AP) — The European Union and Japan signed a landmark deal on Tuesday that will eliminate nearly all tariffs on products they trade.

The ambitious pact signed in Tokyo runs counter to President Donald Trump’s moves to hike tariffs on imports from many U.S. trading partners. It covers a third of the global economy and markets of more than 600 million people.

“The EU and Japan showed an undeterred determination to lead the world as flag-bearers for free trade,” Abe said at a joint news conference with European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Tusk praised the deal as “the largest bilateral trade deal ever.” He said the partnership is being strengthened in various other areas, including defense, climate change and human exchange, and is “sending a clear message” against protectionism.

I Was a White House Stenographer. Trump Wasn't a Fan.

On Friday, at a news conference with Prime Minister Theresa May of Britain a reporter asked President Trump about disparaging comments he had made about her to The Sun newspaper. He denied ever having said them and declared that recordings of the interview would vindicate him. “We record when we deal with reporters,” he said. “We solve a lot of problems with the good old recording instrument.”

Do we?

“We have a problem,” my colleague announced in our office the Monday after Mr. Trump’s inauguration. “Trump doesn’t like microphones near his face.”

She had just returned from the West Wing, where she’d tried to do her job the way stenographers had since Ronald Reagan. As White House stenographers, we were among the handful of staff members who remained at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue when the administration changed. This was my first transition, but my boss had said every new administration she’d worked in since the 1980s was grateful for our help.
