Hill's Jan. 6 committee includes Trump White House in first document requests

The select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection on Wednesday sent a flurry of requests to federal agencies for records related to the attack, including communications from the Trump White House.

It’s the panel’s first step to seek documents on how the U.S. government handled the chaos. Set up by House Democrats with two anti-Trump GOP members, the select committee is escalating its investigation even as the House breaks for a monthlong recess.

The committee announced that it plans to seek records from the executive branch related to the attack and its run-up — including "communications within and among the White House and Executive Branch agencies" on and before Jan. 6.

The requests also sought records on attempts to place politically loyal personnel in positions across the government after the election, the planning, organization and response to Jan. 6 and earlier, and attempts to overturn the rule of law and overturn the 2020 election.

2 Congress members fly to Kabul amid chaotic evacuation

Source: The Detroit Free Press

WASHINGTON — Two members of Congress flew unannounced into Kabul airport in the middle of the ongoing chaotic evacuation Tuesday, stunning State Department and U.S. military personnel who had to divert resources to provide security and information to the lawmakers, U.S. officials said.

Officials said Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., and Rep. Peter Meijer, R-Mich., flew in on a charter aircraft and were on the ground at the Kabul airport for several hours. Officials said the two men were flying out of Kabul on another charter aircraft, prompting officials to complain that they were taking seats that could have gone to other Americans or Afghans fleeing the country.

Two officials familiar with the flight said that State Department, Defense Department and White House officials were furious about the incident because it was done without coordination with diplomats or military commanders directing the evacuation.

The U.S. military found out about the visit as the legislators' aircraft was inbound to Kabul, according to the officials. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing military operations.

Mistrial declared in Michael Avenatti embezzlement case

A mistrial was declared Tuesday in the federal case against attorney Michael Avenatti, who is accused of embezzling millions of dollars from his clients for personal use and to pay creditors.

US District Court Judge Michael V. Selna in Orange County, California, granted the motion for mistrial on technical grounds, ruling that prosecutors failed to turn financial evidence over to Avenatti.

Avenatti, 50, is accused of defrauding at least five former clients of his former law firm, one a paraplegic, by stealing nearly $10 million in settlement funds from them.

Avenatti rose to prominence when he represented Stormy Daniels against former President Donald Trump and has been representing himself in this case.

Rules Committee Chair McGovern confirms to reporters that the House will "deem and pass" the budget

Rules Committee Chair McGovern confirms to reporters that the House will "deem and pass" the budget resolution tonight - basically daring the (now ten) moderates to vote against it.

This means that the resolution would be adopted if/when the rule passes. Again, it's not clear that they have the votes to pass it.

https://twitter.com/Grace_Segers/status/1429936416478351362

Another quick breakdown:

— The rule vote tonight will “deem” the budget passed. Meaning the rule will pass the budget and set up debate for infrastructure and voting rights

— Deeming is typically used if ppl want budget to pass immediately, but don’t want to be on record for it

Deeming here does not solve any of the moderates' issues. voting for the rule is now a vote for the budget without infrastrucutre … so it’s not really a solution to the issue that moderates had, which was infra then budget.

Opinion: Time to say it: We're done with the vaccine refusers

On Monday, the Food and Drug Administration granted full approval to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for the coronavirus, and approvals for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines could follow soon. This could be a significant step in convincing the millions of unvaccinated Americans to finally get vaccinated, even if it doesn’t quickly transform the state of the pandemic.

It’s also an opportunity for us to say to the hard-core vaccine refusers: We’re done with you.

We’ll treat you when you come to the hospital, of course, because that’s how medicine works; while doctors and nurses dealing with the wave of covid-19 patients caused by the delta variant might like to turn away anyone who refused to take a vaccine, they won’t. But it’s time to refocus our outreach efforts and our public and private pandemic policies so that accommodating, understanding and pandering to the refusers is no longer one of our chief concerns....

...

But just as the virus itself will always be with us, so will the adamant refusers. They’ll be trying out insane new treatments, while the rest of us shake our heads at people who’d rather gargle with turpentine (or whatever the next Facebook remedy is) than get a free lifesaving vaccine. They’ll keep engaging in unhinged and violent public behavior (like assaulting teachers over mask policies), for which they should just be arrested. Our only concern should be keeping ourselves safe from them; they deserve no more consideration than that.

They won’t disappear, but we can treat them like social pariahs. And if they don’t like it? They can go ahead and wallow in their fantasies of oppression and courageous independence. Nobody said “freedom” was free.
