The life of Rep. Katie Porter: How a self-proclaimed 'minivan-driving mom' is holding Wall Street and Facebook to the fire

Democrat Rep. Katie Porter is a fighter.

The professor-turned-congresswoman isn't a typical politician. She's a minivan-driving mother of three, inspired by consumer protections, housing fairness, and women's rights.

She's a bankruptcy expert and law professor, who never thought she'd run for office. But the night President Donald Trump was elected, she changed her mind.

And while it was no easy victory, in a county that had never been won by a Democrat, she had the backing of two powerful Democrats — Elizabeth Warren, her former teacher, and Kamala Harris, her former boss.

Since entering Congress, Porter's been using skills she picked up from her years as a professor and researcher to hold some of the most powerful people in the country to account. American Banker called her the "fiercest disruptor in Congress" since Warren.

Here's a look at Porter's life so far, in photos.

Facebook Launches News Section to Compensate Publishers

Source: Bloomberg

Facebook Inc. introduced a separate news section in its flagship app, offering users more control over articles they see and providing money to the publishers whose stories are featured.

The section, called Facebook News, helps the social-media giant stem criticism on two fronts: It’s an effort to combat misinformation and could improve relationships with media companies, which have complained that Facebook profits from selling advertising alongside their articles.

Facebook News debuts Friday to some users in the U.S. It will feature articles chosen partly by Facebook employees who “will be free from editorial intervention by anyone at the company.” The section also will be personalized based on news that users prefer and they can hide articles, topics or publishers they don’t want to see.

The section will include stories from about 200 publishers, including national outlets like the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, NBC News and ABC News, and local outlets in big cities such as the Chicago Tribune and Dallas Morning News. It also will feature conservative-leaning sites, including Breitbart News.

Harvey Weinstein Turned Up At An Event For Young Actors. A Woman Confronted Him And Was Thrown Out.

A woman comedian was booed and two attendees kicked out after they protested the appearance of disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein at an event for young performers in lower Manhattan on Wednesday night.

Weinstein turned up with an entourage to watch Actor's Hour, a monthly event "dedicated to artists" at the Downtime bar in the Lower East Side.

One comedian, Kelly Bachman, called him out in her act onstage, referring to him as "the elephant in the room" and "Freddy Krueger."

"I didn’t know we had to bring our own Mace and rape whistles to Actor's Hour," said Bachman in a video posted to Instagram.

This scandal writes itself.

Confirmed by @Nationals: Trump not scheduled to throw out the first pitch if there's a Game 5 of the World Series. Instead, he'll watch @chefjoseandres-- a critic who pulled out of Trump's DC hotel -- throw the ceremonial pitch

From the press release: "If a Game 5 is necessary, the Nationals will welcome chef and humanitarian José Andrés to throw a ceremonial first pitch. Named one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” in both 2012 and 2018, Andrés is an internationally-recognized...

Tulsi Gabbard Criticizes 'Partisan' Impeachment Inquiry: 'It Needs to be a Transparent Process'

Tulsi Gabbard has poured cold water on the impeachment inquiry, raising concerns about its transparency and suggesting it is being run in a "partisan" way.

The 2020 Democratic presidential candidate told Fox News host Sean Hannity that she didn't know what was going on at the "closed door" hearings being held in the Capitol's basement, and said Americans "deserved to know exactly what the facts are."

Her comments on the impeachment inquiry echoed criticisms made by House Republicans, who tried to storm the secure room where testimonies were being heard behind closed doors on Wednesday.

The stunt was widely derided by Democrats, with 2020 candidate Pete Buttigieg saying it was an "embarrassment" and Rep. Ro Khanna, who was in the room, saying it resembled a "fraternity" scene.

A shout-out to Richard Engel.

His reporting regarding the Kurds has been phenomenal. Thank you!

.@realDonaldTrump calling on the Kurdish people to head to Syria's "Oil Region" where they have never lived. He's saying Kurds should abandon their cities, farms and homes. Mass population transfer was a tactic Stalin often used, not one called for by modern American presidents.

Deeply upsetting the Kurds of Syria, who fought bravely against ISIS, lost so many -many still injured- now have to hide what they did, as Russia, Turkey and Assad forces will call them 'traitors,' blackmail and extort them. They will have to hide a proud history. Unfair. Wrong,

Tonight as the Kurdish people look up at the stars here in northern Syria, they have many big decisions to make. Where to send their families? Who can they trust? Can they reconcile with the Assad govenment? Can the trust Putin? And why Trump started all this mess to begin with.

I'm so taken by this image. Rarely can we see into the House chamber floor through this door, and cameras are not allowed to face this way, so to have this view of Rep. Cummings at the open door of the chamber he served is just lovely.
