DeVos criticized teachers at D.C. school she visited and they are not having it

DeVos, who has no professional experience in public education, is an avowed proponent of voucher schools, charter schools, online schools and other alternatives to traditional public schools. Teachers across the country have been galled by what they see as her lack of faith in — and understanding of — the public schools that educate nearly nine in 10 of the nation’s children.

Jefferson educators found her comments about their work hard to take: On Friday evening, the school responded to DeVos via its Twitter account, taking exception to the education secretary’s characterization of Jefferson teachers.

“We’re about to take her to school,” the first of 11 rapid-fire tweets said.

The tweetstorm singled out teachers like Jessica Harris, who built Jefferson’s band program “from the ground up,” and Ashley Shepherd and Britany Locher, who not only teach students ranging from a first- to eighth-grade reading level, but also “maintain a positive classroom environment focused on rigorous content, humor, and love. They aren’t waiting to be told what to do.”

“JA teachers are not in a ‘receive mode,'” the tweets concluded. “Unless you mean we ‘receive’ students at a 2nd grade level and move them to an 8th grade level.”

Logan Receives A 96% Positive Score On Rotten Tomatoes

Logan won’t be out in theaters for another two weeks, but many critics and press were able to see the film early this past Thursday. And, judging by Rotten Tomatoes, James Mangold’s film is currently holding with a 96% positive ratings score. This is already far higher than the previous Wolverine films.

The film is very much a contemporary western and one of the most highly anticipated superhero films of 2017. It’s the second R-rated superhero film to be released, the first one being Deadpool, and for a character like Wolverine, it’s been a long time coming.

You can read Heroic Hollywood’s review of Logan here.

The film debuted to press without an end-credits scene, however, 20th Century Fox has updated Logan’s run time and this suggests that there will be one added for general audiences.

The film is tracking to make $60 million during its opening weekend. The film will mark the final time Hugh Jackman will play the character of Wolverine, a role he originated in 2000’s X-Men.

Oklahoma restaurant fires 12 workers after Day Without Immigrants

dozen employees at the I Don’t Care Bar and Grill in Catoosa, Oklahoma lost their jobs Friday when they skipped work to show solidarity for “A Day Without Immigrants.”

According to a report from KTUL news, all of the employees are Latinos who felt it was important to participate in the protest. None of them anticipated they would be fired, however.

“They feel like they’ve been unfairly terminated,” one friend translated for the employees.

They’ve been working at the bar and grill since it opened almost two years ago.

“(They’re) upset they stood for something they felt was necessary so the community would stand together, and they got terminated for that,” the friend told KTUL.

To make matters worse, the owner of the I Don’t Care Bar and Grill fired them via text message.

“You and your family are fired,” the text read. “I hope you enjoyed your day off, and you can enjoy many more. Love you.”

RANT: Wy is it cheaper to die than stay healthy?

My mom spent ten days in the hospital before she passed away in 2014. By the time Medicare and Blue Cross paid for everything, we were left with a minimal television fee. But when my 82 year-old dad went in for his annual physical two weeks ago, he still had to pay $200 out of his pocket after everything else was paid. It's as if you can die free of charge but God forbid you try to stay healthy under this broken system.
