Sikh advocacy group calls for investigation into racial bias in Indianapolis shooting

A prominent Sikh advocacy group is calling for an investigation into the Indianapolis shooting to determine if racial bias played a role in the attack.

The New York-based Sikh Coalition said in a statement Saturday that it was calling for the role after police revealed no motives yet for this week’s shooting, which killed eight, including four members of the Sikh community.

“No further information about his possible motive has been released at this time, but we fully expect that authorities should and will conduct a full investigation--including the possibility of bias as a factor,” the group said.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the victims of this horrific violence,” added Satjeet Kaur, Sikh Coalition Executive Director. “While we don’t yet know the motive of the shooter, he targeted a facility known to be heavily populated by Sikh employees, and the attack is traumatic for our community as we continue to face senseless violence. Further traumatizing is the reality that many of these community members, like Sikhs we have worked with in the past, will eventually have to return to the place where their lives were almost taken from them.”

The victims of the Thursday shooting were identified as 32-year-old Matthew R. Alexander, 19-year-old Samaria Blackwell, 66-year-old Amarjeet Johal, 64-year-old Jaswinder Kaur, 68-year-old Jaswinder Singh, 48-year-old Amarjit Sekhon, 19-year-old Karlie Smith and 74-year-old John Weisert.

VOTING LOCAL: Xander Orenstein for Pittcbugh, PA District Magistrate

I’m a queer housing organizer and scientist running for Magisterial District Judge in Pittsburgh’s Magisterial District 05-03-10 which covers parts of Lawrenceville, Bloomfield, and Polish Hill.

As Magistrate Judge, I will seek fairness, compassion and above all, impartiality for the community I hope to represent.

The public health crisis presented by Covid-19 demands our judiciary place the well-being of the community first and foremost in a way that challenges a justice-as-usual approach. As a rising number of people fall below the poverty line, our community faces a deterioration of the already existing housing crisis by the devastating impact of evictions. The families affected most are often the most vulnerable to begin with. As a front line advocate advising these families of their rights going into court, I have seen first hand and profoundly been affected by the unique role the Judiciary can play in protecting the community’s basic right to shelter.

The social and institutional injustices highlighted by the Black Lives Matter movement are intimately linked to housing and financial insecurity, and so bail reform and careful review of issuance of warrants are similarly central to my vision of fair, compassionate and merciful adjudicating.

I have trained as a scientist, and practice sword fighting as a passion. While this sort of background may be atypical, it is by no means a hindrance to judging fairly and in a manner that strengthens the community. Central to my training in both these fields is the power of discipline, patience and anticipating how the smallest of actions can have a massive effect.

Important decisions should only be undertaken with great care, and I hope you will join me in building a better community together.

VOTING LOCAL: Dr. Tyler Titus: Making LGBTQ+ History in Erie County and Pennsylvania

r. Tyler Titus became the first openly trans-identifying person to win office in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 2017, when they were elected to the Erie City School Board, the same year that Dr. Rachel Levine was appointed to serve as Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Health.

For the 2021 election cycle in Erie, Titus, who now serves as school board president, is once again running for elected office: this time as the Erie County Executive. This role would have a broader expanse for Erie than their work on the school board.

“The Erie County Executive manages all the services the county provides from the public libraries to the county health department to public safety. They oversee roughly 1200 employees and have a major role in determining the use of the significant $484 million budget,” Titus shared, explaining that during the COVID-19 pandemic the role has proved increasingly crucial. “In the next year, it’ll be just as critical, as they determine the use of the $275 million allotted to Erie County in the American Rescue Plan.”

Making sure the funds are allocated correctly and sustainably is going to be a chief demand should Titus win election. Erie, like many sections of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and neighboring states are described as part of the “rust belt.” These communities — which once were prosperous prior to the closure of mines and local manufacturing — have unique demographics, as they are part-urban and part-rural.

VOTING LOCAL: Sherlyna Hanna for Hyattsville City Council, Ward 3, MD

I am an engaged and motivated servant leader dedicated to serving my community. In addition to my social skills, I have demonstrated a commitment to Hyattsville through philanthropy, psychotherapy, and advocacy. I graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and Sociology. I moved to Hyattsville to pursue a Master’s degree in Social Work at Howard University. After graduating from Howard, my passion and appreciation for the Hyattsville community inspired me to make it my home.

Through my work as a social worker, I recognize that the problems my clients are faced with – poverty, recidivism, homelessness, affordability, etc. – are prevalent throughout the community, and have formed a passion for advocacy. As a Board Member for the Maryland State Advisory Board for Juvenile Services, I am committed to consulting and advising the Secretary of Juvenile Services regarding policies and programs to improve juvenile services across the state. I’ve also had the pleasure to serve as the 2020/2021 Maryland fellow for IGNITE National with a goal to build and sustain school partnerships to deliver college civic leadership programming and develop consistently evolving civic engagement curriculum that is focused on building political power in every young woman.
