Attorney Lori Lightfoot defeated Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle in Tuesday’s election, making her Chicago’s first African-American female mayor, according to unofficial returns.

Lightfoot jumped out to an early lead over Preckwinkle, a longtime political power broker, and had what appeared to be an insurmountable lead.

Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor making her first run for elected office, had 74 percent to Preckwinkle’s 26 percent, with 1,583 of 2,069 precincts reporting, according to unofficial vote totals.

The two candidates emerged from a record field of 14 candidates in the Feb. 26 first-round election for the chance to become Chicago’s 56th mayor.

Lightfoot becomes the third African-American to serve as mayor. Harold Washington was elected in 1983 as the city’s first black mayor and won re-election in 1987 before dying in officer later that year. Eugene Sawyer, the city’s second black mayor, was appointed to serve out Washington’s term until a 1989 special election.

Seamus Hughes of the George Washington Program on Extremism tweeted Wednesday that a U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant was arrested on drugs and weapons charges. He noted that it seemed like an everyday event until court documents were published.

Christopher Paul Hasson was reportedly in contact with white supremacists and was developing a “hit list” of liberal senators he was aiming to attack.

“Hint about the importance of the case was in the opening paragraph,” said Hughes with a screen capture of the documents.

Police were responding to reports of a mass shooting that left several people injured and may have led to casualties Wednesday night inside a Thousand Oaks bar.
Emergency crews were responding to an "active shooter" inside the Borderline Bar & Grill, according to a tweet from the Ventura County Fire Department.

One law enforcement official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told The Times that at least 30 shots had been fired and that there are casualties.

According to witnesses at the scene, someone ran into the bar around 11:30 p.m. and started firing what appeared to be a black pistol.
"He shot a lot, at least 30 times. I could still hear gunshots after everyone left," said the person, who did not give a name.
President Donald Trump is poised to pardon Scooter J. Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, according to sources familiar with the president’s thinking.

The president has already signed off on the pardon, which is something he has been considering for several months, sources told ABC News.

The move would mark another controversial pardon for Trump and could raise questions as an increasing number of the president’s political allies have landed themselves in legal jeopardy. The White House has repeatedly said that no pardons are currently on the table for people caught up in the Russia investigation.
Trump wrote Putin to personally invite him to 2013 Miss Universe Pageant: report
President Trump reportedly wrote a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2013 to personally invite him to the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow.

Multiple people familiar with the letter told The Washington Post that the document has been turned over to investigators probing Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The letter extended an invitation for Putin to attend the pageant, which Trump owned, and also noted that Trump was looking forward to seeing “beautiful” women on his trip to Russia, according to the report published Friday.

During the same month in 2013, Trump tweeted that he was hoping to meet Putin, writing, “Do you think Putin will be going to The Miss Universe Pageant in November in Moscow — if so, will he become my new best friend?”
Sen. Bob Corker, Tennessee Republican, won't seek re-election next year
(CNN)Tennessee Republican Sen. Bob Corker said Tuesday he will retire at the end of 2018.

"After much thought, consideration and family discussion over the past year, Elizabeth and I have decided that I will leave the United States Senate when my term expires at the end of 2018," Corker said in a released statement.

Corker is the Senate's foreign relations committee chairman and had told CNN earlier this month that he was considering whether to run again.

"When I ran for the Senate in 2006, I told people that I couldn't imagine serving for more than two terms," Corker said in his statement Tuesday. "Understandably, as we have gained influence, that decision has become more difficult. But I have always been drawn to the citizen legislator model, and while I realize it is not for everyone, I believe with the kind of service I provide, it is the right one for me."

Corker, who was at one time among those considered a candidate to be President Donald Trump's secretary of state, had been increasingly critical of the President in recent months.
