(CNN)Tennessee Republican Sen. Bob Corker said Tuesday he will retire at the end of 2018.

"After much thought, consideration and family discussion over the past year, Elizabeth and I have decided that I will leave the United States Senate when my term expires at the end of 2018," Corker said in a released statement.

Corker is the Senate's foreign relations committee chairman and had told CNN earlier this month that he was considering whether to run again.

"When I ran for the Senate in 2006, I told people that I couldn't imagine serving for more than two terms," Corker said in his statement Tuesday. "Understandably, as we have gained influence, that decision has become more difficult. But I have always been drawn to the citizen legislator model, and while I realize it is not for everyone, I believe with the kind of service I provide, it is the right one for me."

Corker, who was at one time among those considered a candidate to be President Donald Trump's secretary of state, had been increasingly critical of the President in recent months.
Trump thanks Putin for slashing U.S. diplomatic staff

Warren Strobel and Jonathan Landay
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for ordering the United States to slash its diplomatic staff in Russia, remarks likely to rekindle criticism of Trump's kid-gloves handling of Putin.

Breaking nearly two weeks of silence on Putin's July 30 order cutting U.S. embassy and consulate staff by nearly two thirds, Trump said: "I'm very thankful that he let go of a large number of people because now we have a smaller payroll."

Trump said "there’s no real reason for them to go back" and "we're going to save a lot of money," in response to Putin's Cold War-style move, differing from the reactions of other presidents in similar circumstances in the past.

New GOP health bill lacks the votes to pass

BY JORDAIN CARNEY - 07/17/17 08:37 PM EDT

GOP Sens. Jerry Moran (Kansas) and Mike Lee (Utah) announced on Monday night they will not support taking up a bill repealing and replacing ObamaCare, effectively blocking the legislation.

"This closed-door process has yielded the [bill], which fails to repeal the Affordable Care Act or address healthcare’s rising costs. For the same reasons I could not support the previous version of this bill, I cannot support this one," Moran said in a statement.

Lee added on Twitter that he and Moran will not support proceeding to "this version" of the Senate GOP legislation, known as the Better Care Reconciliation Act.

Senate Judiciary Committee opens investigation into Trump for firing former FBI Director James Comey

The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that the Senate Judiciary Committee will investigate President Donald Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

According to the report, senators want to know if Trump acted improperly when he allegedly fired Comey to influence an investigation into Russia’s hacking of the 2016 U.S. election.

“The Judiciary Committee has an obligation to fully investigate any alleged improper partisan interference in law enforcement investigations,” Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) said in a statement. “It is my view that fully investigating the facts, circumstances, and rationale for Mr. Comey’s removal will provide us the opportunity to do that on a cooperative, bipartisan basis.”

Massive fire engulfs London high-rise, leaving 'a number of fatalities'
By KARMA ALLEN DAVID CAPLAN JOSHUA HOYOS Jun 14, 2017, 4:29 AM ET

A massive fire engulfed a residential high-rise building in London on Wednesday, leaving scores injured and an undetermined amount of people dead.

The London Fire Brigade dispatched at least 40 fire engines, 20 ambulance crews and 200 firefighters in an effort to battle the conflagration at the 24-story Grenfell Tower in West London.

A representative for the London Fire Brigade said there had been "a number of fatalities," but declined to say how many people had died.

"This is an unprecedented incident," London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton told reporters. "In my 29 years of being a firefighter, I have never ever seen anything of this scale."

Russian Once Tied to Trump Aide Seeks Immunity to Testify Before Congress
By BARRY MEIER and JESSE DRUCKER

Oleg V. Deripaska, a Russian oligarch once close to President Trump’s former campaign manager, has offered to cooperate with congressional committees investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election, but lawmakers are unwilling to accept his conditions, according to congressional officials.

Mr. Deripaska’s offer comes amid increased attention to his ties to Paul Manafort, who is one of several Trump associates under F.B.I. scrutiny for possible collusion with Russia during the presidential campaign. The two men did business together in the mid-2000s, when Mr. Manafort, a Republican operative, was also providing campaign advice to Kremlin-backed politicians in Ukraine. Their relationship subsequently soured and devolved into a lawsuit.

Mr. Deripaska, an aluminum magnate who is a member of the inner circle of the Russian president, Vladimir V. Putin, recently offered to cooperate with congressional intelligence committees in exchange for a grant of full immunity, according to three congressional officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the issue publicly. But the Senate and House panels turned him down because of concerns that immunity agreements create complications for federal criminal investigators, the officials said.

Fox News Retracts Debunked Story on Murdered DNC Staffer Seth Rich

Source: Variety

Fox News said it had retracted a story about the murder of Seth Rich, a former Democratic National Committee staffer who was killed in Washington, D.C. last July and which has provided fodder for Sean Hannity, the network’s longest-serving primetime host. Hannity has in recent days promoted a debunked theory that Rich was killed in exchange for providing internal documents to Wikileaks, prompting statements of outrage from his family.

“On May 16, a story was posted on the Fox News website on the investigation into the 2016 murder of DNC Staffer Seth Rich. The article was not initially subjected to the high degree of editorial scrutiny we require for all our reporting. Upon appropriate review, the article was found not to meet those standards and has since been removed,” the network said in a posting online Tuesday. “We will continue to investigate this story and will provide updates as warranted. ”

Jennifer Emily Tasha Tsiaperas

A fired Balch Springs officer faces a murder charge in the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards over the weekend as he left a party.
A judge signed a murder warrant Friday afternoon. The officer, Roy Oliver, has not yet been arrested and could turn himself into authorities. Bond is set for $300,000. Murder is punishable by up to life in prison.

Oliver, 37, fired a rifle into a car full of teenagers as it drove away from a party Saturday night, striking the Mesquite High freshman in the head.

Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber said he terminated the six-year veteran of the department for violating policies, though he has refused to provide specifics.

Right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones lost his court battle against his former wife. After a 10-day trial in Texas, it was decided that he would not get custody of his three children.

According to a BuzzFeed report, the jury deliberated for about nine and a half hours and released the ruling late in the evening. Kelly Jones will continue joint custody of the children with the ability to decide where the children live. Before the case, she had joint custody but only limited and supervised visitation with the children living with their father.

Mr. Jones apparently sat stoic-faced, BuzzFeed said and refused to speak to reporters following the trial. Ms. Jones hugged her attorney and wiped tears from her eyes.
