Red Hen: Labor Day Update

I purchased a Red Hen gift card I will never use and now receive email from them.

Dear Friend of the Hen,
It's been a long, strange couple of months. What was meant as a quiet, private act of conscience has turned into something much larger. As a result, we've been challenged in ways we never expected -- personally or as a business. We have also met wonderful people, had many hard but worthwhile conversations, and learned a lot about our country, our fellow Americans, and what it takes to live our convictions. We have been especially gratified by your expressions of support, and wish we had time to respond personally to each one.

We've received hundreds of donations to benefit our local women's shelter, our area food pantry, first responders -- fire, rescue, police -- veterans, our resurgent chapter of the NAACP, and those who suffer from inadequate shelter. It warms our hearts.

We're happy to report that we have arranged to pass along those donations in the forms that meet each group's needs and requirements. Some of them are receiving gift certificates to use as they like. Others requested that we arrange for fundraising events at the restaurant. Our terrific police and fire department -- who kept us safe and informed through some scary moments -- has declined any direct donation to officers for doing their duties, but we are working with local foundations to support their hard work.

Finally, despite the keenest wishes of some haters out there, the restaurant is doing very well. The dining room is filled to capacity most nights with local friends and travelers from all over the country, many of whom end up talking with each other between tables. It's a great, intimate atmosphere, full of positive feeling, warm light, and the scent of delicious food. Those evenings make it all worthwhile.

If you are in our area, please come for a visit. We'd love to meet you.

All my best,
Stephanie

How the black vote carried Andrew Gillum to victory

Andrew Gillum’s campaign always said to count on black voters.

On Tuesday, the Tallahassee mayor’s upset win proved him right.

Gillum’s friend-turned competitor former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham won the vast majority of counties across Florida in the state’s Democratic primary for governor. But Gillum was able to win where it mattered — which also happens to be where more Democrats are black.

The map below shows Gillum did best in huge counties like Duval and Broward, while Graham won small and medium counties across the state and dominated the vaunted Interstate-4 corridor.

The far right is meeting the far left in Florida, and it's going to be a doozy

God bless their cranky souls, Republican voters do not fool around in Florida.

They don’t care what the media says or, for that matter, the polls. They don’t care which candidate the big-shot business leaders are bankrolling. They don’t even care whom their own party leaders are supporting.

Back in 2010, they decided they were tired of politics-as-usual candidates and took a chance on an unknown businessman in the gubernatorial race.

Eight years later, their tone has not softened.

The voters who put Rick Scott in the Governor’s Mansion and helped deliver the White House to Donald Trump have now elevated another drain-the-swamp-style candidate by the name of Ron DeSantis.

You want to know how impressive the Republicans’ wrath is?

Democrats have decided to match them outrage for outrage.

Apparently a stick shift is the best theft deterrent. They would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for being bumbling kids!

Teens allegedly tried to steal woman's car but couldn't work manual transmission

NASHVILLE, TN (RNN) – Two teenagers face various charges after police say they allegedly tried to carjack a woman but were unable to take off in her car due to its manual transmission.

Officers arrested a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old on an evening in early August following two separate alleged carjacking attempts, according to a police press release.

The suspects ran up to the first victim in a parking garage at 6:20 p.m. and opened the front doors on both the driver and passenger sides of her car, police say.

The victim screamed and blasted the car horn when the suspects allegedly attempted to pull her from her car. She sustained minor injuries.

Ocasio-Cortez Slams Politician Who Called Her 'This Girl... or Whatever She Is'

Ron DeSantis dismissed congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's credentials in a Saturday campaign speech.

If the Democratic Party is having a hard time wrapping its head around first-time candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's major upset last month, the GOP is having an even worse time—especially when the specter of democratic socialism is raised.

At a Saturday campaign event, Florida Representative Ron DeSantis, who's currently running for governor, took a jab at Ocasio-Cortez to score easy points with the conservative crowd, knocking her political views and prowess.

Red Sparrow spoke at USF St. Petersburg FL world affairs conference

While federal prosecutors believe Maria Butina was organizing a shadow campaign to influence American politics ahead of the 2016 election on behalf of Russia, she spoke at a conference at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg on world affairs.

Butina, 29, tried to broker a private meeting between then-presidential candidate Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2016, according to the New York Times. And she used a gun-rights organization, reported to be the National Rifle Association, and the National Prayer Breakfast as conduits through which she tried to soften American political views on Russia, federal court records show. She was arrested Sunday, accused of being a covert Russian agent.

In the meantime, Butina attended the 2016 St. Petersburg Conference on World Affairs, hosted at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg that February.

There, she participated on two panels, one called "Gun Rights, Mental Health Rights/ Where Should Societies Draw the Line?" That panel explored how other countries balance gun control and gun rights, and sought to have both conservative and liberal viewpoints, according to conference organizers, via USFSP spokesman Matt Cimitile. She served on that panel with USF family studies Professor Mary Armstrong; Howard Simon, the retiring executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida; and documentary filmmaker Meg Moritz. It was moderated by USF history and politics Professor Raymond Arsenault.

Avenatti on Trump-Cohen tape: 'I know this is the tip of the iceberg'

The lawyer for porn star Stormy Daniels told CNBC on Friday that he knows secret recordings reportedly made by President Donald Trump's ex-attorney Michel Cohen about paying off a Playboy model are "the tip of the iceberg."

That lawyer, Michael Avenatti, had alleged the existence of Cohen's recordings in May during court proceedings involving materials seized from Cohen in FBI raids a month earlier.

"Back on May 30, in front of the federal courthouse, I demanded the release of the trump tapes and disclosed their existence at that time, and I am once again demanding the release of all audio recordings made of Donald Trump," Avenatti said.

At that time, Avenatti suggested the recordings could potentially relate to his client Daniels, who is suing Trump and Cohen to void a contract she signed that prevents her from discussing an alleged affair with Trump from years earlier.

Hillary 2020? Trump better hope not.

Why Hillary Clinton would be well-positioned to win in a rematch

On Oct. 16, 11 months after defeating her, President Trump tweeted another of his regular insults about his 2016 opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton. Sandwiched between boasts about his presumed role in the stock market’s rise and his rally in South Carolina, Trump wrote: “I was recently asked if Crooked Hillary Clinton is going to run in 2020? My answer was, ‘I hope so!’”

Putting aside the reckless braggadocio — and blatant sexism — inherent in such a statement, the entire scenario seemed absurd. Most pundits (and most of the American public) discount the idea of Clinton running in 2020, doubtful she could win the Democratic nomination, let alone the election, after her stunning loss to Trump. Clinton herself has stated that her political career is over, that she is more interested in speaking out against Trump as a private citizen.
