(Mar A Lago) Showdown before the raid: FBI agents and prosecutors argued over Trump - WaPo

(Mar A Lago) Showdown before the raid: FBI agents and prosecutors argued over Trump - WaPo

Months of disputes between Justice Department prosecutors and FBI agents over how best to try to recover classified documents from Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club and residence led to a tense showdown near the end of July last year, according to four people familiar with the discussions.

Prosecutors argued that new evidence suggested Trump was knowingly concealing secret documents at his Palm Beach, Fla., home and urged the FBI to conduct a surprise raid at the property. But two senior FBI officials who would be in charge of leading the search resisted the plan as too combative and proposed instead to seek Trump’s permission to search his property, according to the four people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a sensitive investigation.

Prosecutors ultimately prevailed in that dispute, one of several previously unreported clashes in a tense tug-of-war between two arms of the Justice Department over how aggressively to pursue a criminal investigation of a former president. The FBI conducted an unprecedented raid on Aug. 8, recovering more than 100 classified items, among them a document describing a foreign government’s military defenses, including its nuclear capabilities.

Starting in May, FBI agents in the Washington field office had sought to slow the probe, urging caution given its extraordinary sensitivity, the people said. Some of those field agents wanted to shutter the criminal investigation altogether in early June, after Trump’s legal team asserted a diligent search had been conducted and all classified records had been turned over, according to some people with knowledge of the discussions.

The idea of closing the probe was not something that was discussed or considered by FBI leadership and would not have been approved, a senior law enforcement official said. This account reveals for the first time...

All three of these articles have already been posted here at DU.

Wherever you stand on this, it is not a good look. Makes me want to take a shower.

Maybe President Biden should go down and knock a few heads together before it gets any dirtier.

'The maths are hard': Marjorie Taylor Greene mocked for not understanding what 'seized' means

'The maths are hard': Marjorie Taylor Greene mocked for not understanding what 'seized' means - RawStory

United States Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) undermined her own attack on President Joe Biden's immigration policies surrounding illegal drugs that have been intercepted by Customs and Border Patrol during a Tuesday House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee hearing.

"I want you to know that in 2020 there were 4,800 pounds of fentanyl seized by CBP. But in 2021, fiscal year 2021, it increased to 11,200 pounds of fentanyl was seized by the CBP. That is a direct result of Biden administration failure policies," said Greene. "Now here we are in – to date, to date, fiscal, fiscal year 2023 – they have already seized 12,500 pounds of fentanyl. The Biden administration is failing this country by not protecting our border and securing our border, and stopping Chinese fentanyl from being brought into our country illegally by the cartels, and people are dying every single day because of it."

Social media users immediately pounced on Greene for, apparently, not understanding what the word "seized" means.

Ghost-Rebooted: "More seizures is better right?"

Jaini Margaret: "Hey @RepMTG The word 'seized' when referring to the border, means something was taken at the border & not permitted to come into America. So, the Biden administration has stopped more fentanyl from getting past the border & into America than the Trump administration."

BruceGoldberg: "She really needs to watch this clip, over and over (if necessary) to fully grasp the magnitude of her self-own. It's literally a tutorial."

McCarthy, GOP pump brakes on release of Jan. 6 footage to Tucker Carlson - TheHill

House Republicans are pumping the brakes on the release of Jan. 6 surveillance footage they’ve offered to Fox News host Tucker Carlson and going on offense against Democrats who have spent the past week slamming the move.

Republican leaders are emphasizing that no clips will be broadcast without prior security clearance while accusing Democrats of neglecting the same precautions during the investigation by the House select committee last year — a charge the Democrats quickly rejected.

Carlson, Fox’s wildly popular conservative pundit, said last week that he would begin airing footage from the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot this week, after Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) offered him what Carlson described as “unfettered” exclusive access to more than 40,000 hours of unreleased surveillance tape starting earlier in the month.

Yet McCarthy and other Republicans, following days of silence on the topic, made clear Tuesday that no information would be released to Carlson’s team — let alone broadcast publicly — before the footage is screened to ensure it doesn’t compromise the security of the Capitol complex.

Biden sees surge in Dem backing for 2024 run, with support highest among the young: poll - TheHill

Biden sees surge in Dem backing for 2024 run, with support highest among the young: poll - TheHill

The number of Democratic voters who think President Biden should be the party’s nominee in 2024 is rising, according to a new Emerson College national survey released on Tuesday.

Seventy-one percent of Democratic voters said Biden should carry the party’s banner in the presidential election next year, up from 58 percent in last month’s Emerson College poll.

Support for Biden to run for a second term is highest among 18- to 34-year-old Democratic voters, with 85 percent of the group saying he should run again.
Only 15 percent of 18 to 34-year-old Democratic voters said someone else should be the nominee, according to the survey.

Seventy-two percent of 35- to 49-year-old Democrats said Biden should be the nominee, while 28 percent said it should be someone else. Among 50- to 64-year-old Democratic voters, 61 percent said he should be the nominee, while 39 percent said it should be someone else. Sixty-seven percent of Democrats 65 years and older said he should be the nominee, and 33 percent said it should be someone else.

Iowa students to leave class Wednesday in statewide protest over LGBTQ bills - Des Moines Register

Iowa students to leave class Wednesday in statewide protest over LGBTQ bills - Des Moines Register

Students at 14 Iowa public school districts and one university are planning to walk out of class Wednesday to protest bills introduced in the Iowa Legislature that they say discriminate against the rights of LGBTQ people.

Several controversial bills centered on LGBTQ youth have been introduced this legislative session. Student organizers are particularly concerned about bills that would require educators to notify parents and guardians if a student is transgender, as well as a bill prohibiting the teaching of gender identity and sexual orientation to students through sixth-grade.

Lawmakers are also considering legislation that would restrict gender-affirming care for minors this session.

Gov. Kim Reynolds has pushed a "parental control" agenda for public education, saying "woke" policy decisions by school districts are undermining parents. "Parents are the decision-makers for their children," Reynolds said at a talk for the free market Cato Institute. "I think it’s so sad that we have to codify that in today’s environment, but the fact of the matter is we have to."
