I crossed paths with Sidney Poitier

In the late ‘80’s I worked for an insurance company that was conducting a boring audit of airline insurance sales with tickets. I managed to ditch my boss for a break in Ohare’s American Airlines lounge.

As I sat down in the large room I looked across to see only one other customer — a man buried behind a newspaper. At one point as the waiter filled his drink, he lowered the newspaper and I was shocked to see that it was Sidney Poitier.

In awe and fear of being a nuisance, I mustered up the courage to walk across the room. Standing next to him I managed to stammer out a request for his autograph. He reached for something to sign and the only thing I had readily available was an American Airlines ticket sleeve.

He graciously signed it, I thanked him and turned clutching my treasure to hurriedly go and tell my boss.

What a memory.

PS. I’ve searched all of my memorabilia for the ticket sleeve today but couldn’t find it.

I know four very close people who have the "sniffles" today.

All are vaccinated.

To a person they just think they’re under the weather.

Lines for tests were blocks long yesterday but only one of them attempted to get tested.

I’m staying in, staying away and staying safe as I can.

Merry Christmas! 🎁🎄

Omicron extremely mild no hospitalizations

https://qz.com/2095354/what-are-the-symptoms-of-the-omicron-variant/amp/

The South African doctor who first identified the omicron variant that is spreading in the country and abroad has described the symptoms as she observed them in her patients, stating that the strain is so far producing “very, very mild” effects in them.

Dr Angelique Coetzee told BBC News that she had first noticed the symptoms in a young, male patient around the age of 30 whom she normally knew to be very healthy. He was “extremely tired” as well as having “body aches and pains with a bit of a headache,” a “scratchy” rather than sore throat, and no cough or loss of taste or smell, she said. The doctor was speaking about her experience of a small group of patients, and not making general comments about how all patients will experience it.

What are the symptoms of the omicron variant?
Coetzee tested the man for covid-19 and found him to be positive, then tested his family and found them all to have the virus, despite showing only “very, very mild symptoms,” she said.

For the rest of the day, people kept presenting at her surgery with similar symptoms, and all tested positive. Noticing that the symptoms seemed to differ from the delta variant, which had hitherto been the most prevalent form of covid globally, she alerted the country’s vaccines committee, of which she is a member. They announced their resultant discovery of the omicron variant a few days later.

Perhaps reassuringly for those who are worrying about this new development, Coetzee noted that none of the cases she knew of were serious. “What we are seeing clinically in South Africa, and remember that I’m at the epicenter, that’s where I’m practicing, is extremely mild…We haven’t admitted anyone [to hospital]. I spoke to other colleagues of mine: The same picture,” she told the BBC.
However, she did caution that the picture might change in the next weeks.

Found a great roasting pan for holiday cooking at IKEA today

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/koncis-roasting-pan-with-grill-rack-stainless-steel-10099053/

Had been looking all over after replacing the old one. It got burnt and started peeling so I chucked it last week.

Went to Marshalls, TJX and Macys and all had similar pans with one feature I didn’t want: non-retractable handles.

I need the retractable handles to store the pan after use in the bottom drawer of the stove under the oven. The non-folding handle pans don’t fit.

Anyhewww. The best thing is this pan is only $8.99!!!

Can’t go wrong with this.

I love a bargain.

Today was a good day.

Will an innocent man be executed today? 🙏🏽

https://innocenceproject.org/julius-jones-death-row-oklahoma-what-to-know/

Updated on Nov. 3, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. ET: Oklahoma’s Pardon and Parole Board voted 3-1 to recommend clemency for Julius Jones on Nov. 1. The recommendation to commute Mr. Jone’s death sentence to life in prison with the possibility of parole now goes to Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt for consideration.

Mr. Jones is still scheduled to be executed on Nov. 18.

Monday’s recommendation from the board reaffirmed its recommendation following a previous hearing on Sept. 13, 2021.

The following text has been updated to reflect the most recent developments.

Julius Jones has been on death row in Oklahoma for 19 years for a 1999 murder he’s always said he had no part in. Mr. Jones, who is represented by federal attorneys Dale Baich and Amanda Bass, was convicted and sentenced to death at the age of 19 and has now spent half his life in prison, waiting to be executed for a crime that new and compelling evidence suggests he didn’t commit.

More than 6.3 million people, and counting, have signed a petition supporting Mr. Jones in his fight to prove his innocence in the killing of Paul Howell, a businessperson, in Edmond, Okla.,

Despite this, Mr. Jones’ execution has been scheduled for Nov. 18. His is one of seven people facing execution in Oklahoma in the next six months. If carried out, they will be the first executions to take place in Oklahoma since 2015, after a series of botched executions resulted in a statewide moratorium.
