Trump leads by only 6 points in Texas

BOSTON, MA -- A new Emerson College poll in Texas, which has long been a Republican stronghold, shows Donald Trump leading Hillary Clinton by only 6 points (42% to 36%), with 10% of respondents voting for Libertarian Gary Johnson, 6% for the Green Party’s Jill Stein and 6% undecided. Trump’s lead is within the poll’s 3.6% margin of error. The poll was completed before Clinton announced she had been diagnosed with pneumonia.

As a point of comparison, in the 2012 presidential race, Mitt Romney soundly defeated Barack Obama by 16 points in the Lone Star State (57% to 41%). Texas has not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1976, when Jimmy Carter beat GOP incumbent Gerald Ford.

Trump is having mixed success winning over voters who supported Texas Senator Ted Cruz in the state’s GOP primary last March. In the Emerson poll, 76% of Cruz voters plan to vote for Trump in November, while 10% support Johnson, 6% are unsure, and the remaining 7% are split between Stein and Clinton. Cruz won the Texas GOP primary, beating Trump 44% to 27%. Clinton is struggling to win over voters who supported Bernie Sanders in the Texas Democratic primary. Only 49% of Sanders supporters plan to vote for Clinton in November; 21% say they will vote for Stein.

Trump is winning the Independent vote 36% to 19% over Clinton, with Stein taking 16% and Johnson 15%. However, it appears Johnson is hurting Trump more than Clinton, taking 12% of registered Republican voters and 15% of Independents while only winning 3% of registered Democrats.

Colin Powell Called Benghazi A “Stupid Witch Hunt” — And Condi Rice Agreed

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell called the events surrounding and following the attack on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya “a stupid witch hunt,” saying that fault partially lies with the US ambassador who was killed in the attack, according to his personal emails seen by BuzzFeed News.

“Benghazi is a stupid witch hunt. Basic fault falls on a courageous ambassador who thoughts Libyans now love me and I am ok in this very vulnerable place,” Powell wrote in a December 2015 email exchange with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice about US Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, who died in the 2012 incident.

Hillary Clinton was secretary of state during the attack, which was the subject of a special congressional committee and remains an issue in the current presidential campaign.

“But blame also rests on his leaders and supports back here. Pat Kennedy, Intel community, DS and yes HRC” — the last acronym short for Hillary Clinton, added Powell, who served under former President George W. Bush.

“Completely agree,” Rice responds, adding, “Let me know when you’re in town and we’ll have that glass of wine (or two).”

The website DCLeaks.com — which has reported, but not confirmed, ties to Russian intelligence services — obtained Powell’s emails. It may be the latest example of a Russian entity potentially trying to influence the US presidential election — in July, the FBI said it believed Russia was behind the hack of the Democratic National Committee’s internal emails right before they party’s convention.

Kellyanne Conway calls for less ‘medical reporting’ on Trump: ‘We all have a right to privacy’

Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway downplayed the need for “extensive medical reporting” on Donald Trump while accusing Hillary Clinton of a lack of transparency about her health conditions.

Speaking to MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday, Conway said that she did not know what information Trump would disclose about his health when he appears on The Dr. Oz Show on Wednesday.

“I don’t know why we need such extensive medical reporting when we all have a right to privacy,” the campaign manager opined.

Mitchell pointed out that there was a tradition of candidates releasing medical records, which Trump had refused to honor.

“The American people have a right to know what the health is of their perspective commander-in-chief,” Mitchell insisted.

“I agree with your premise,” Conway replied. “And so the question remains, why in the world did Hillary Clinton lie to everyone and conceal such an important fact for two days [after being diagnosed with pneumonia], saying she was overheated and dehydrated and then, of course, hours and hours later after, unfortunately, her health had become the biggest trending story of the day, not the 9/11 fallen.”

Hillary will outperform her poll numbers on election Day and here is why.

I listened to the Upshot podcast today and a reporter recalled her trip to Las Vegas prior to the Nevada Caucus. She first visited a Clinton campaign office and inside were 20 volunteers calling voter and urging them, in Spanish, to turn out and vote for "La Hillary". She then drove across town to one of Bernie's offices where there were a dozen reporters and three volunteers. And the volunteers spent more time chatting with each other than calling.

Now, the reporter was not kicking the Sanders campaign or implying every office looked the same. But what she did see was one candidate generated big crowds and boisterous supporters while the other quietly built the machinery to bring out more casual, less intense Democratic voters in the big primary states. Trump may have the big rooms and big noise, but Hillary has 20 campaign offices in Florida alone. That is how she will turn a narrow win into a sizable win on Election Day.

Why Clinton’s narrow lead is bigger than it looks

So, the next time you see media reports that Florida or Ohio is ‘close’ or that Pennsylvania is ‘tightening,’ you should not be surprised. They are narrowly divided states where it is difficult for one party to blow out the other in a competitive federal election.

But being ‘close’ isn’t the same thing as saying a state is a ‘toss up’ or both candidates have the same chance of winning it.

And because of that, the Clinton-Trump race can be both ‘competitive’ and even ‘close’ in a state and nationally, but at the same time clearly favor one nominee – in this case Clinton.

Deplorable attempts to set Muslim woman on fire.

A Muslim woman wearing traditional garments had her clothes set on fire by a man with a lighter as she shopped on a crowded New York City street over the weekend, police said Monday.

The 35-year-old was dressed in a hijab and standing outside a Valentino store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan Saturday night, when she felt heat on her left side, according to the New York City Police Department.

The woman, who has not been identified, saw that her blouse was on fire and patted out the flames. When she looked up, she noticed a man standing with a lighter in his hand, police said.

The man disappeared down a side street, leaving the startled woman with a “quarter-sized hole” in her blouse and no injuries, NYPD spokesman Christopher Pisano told The Washington Post.

“The male doesn’t say anything and walks away,” Pisano said.

Police are investigating the alleged assault as a hate crime. No one has been arrested and no suspects have been identified. Pisano said the woman was visiting the city from another country; DNAinfo described the woman as a dentist from Glasgow, Scotland.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations said the incident fit an alarming pattern of attacks on Muslims and Islamic sites in recent months.

“We are clearly seeing a spike in attacks on individual Muslims and Islamic institutions in New York and around the country, which should be of concern to all Americans,” said Afaf Nasher, director of the group’s New York chapter, in a statement posted on Facebook. “It is time for the mayor and the NYPD to put forward the necessary resources to investigate and prevent these attacks on the Muslim community.”

First Official Look at Ghost Rider in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD!

Ol’ Flame Head makes the leap from movies to the small screen this fall when Gabriel Luna brings the most recent version of Ghost Rider to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Instead of a motorcycle (or a horse like the original original incarnation), Robbie Reyes drives a flaming 1969 Dodge Charger — and we’ve got an exclusive look at the demon and his car in all their fiery glory.

Ghost Rider “opens up a whole different kind of storytelling for us,” says S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeff Bell. Not only is it the most well-known Marvel character they’ve ever had on the show, but it’s someone whose “origins present themselves as supernatural.” That’s not just a leap for the show, which exists mostly in a world of “spies and agents”; it’s a leap for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before we see Doctor Strange on the big screen in November, Ghost Rider will be laying out the rules for mysticism in the MCU.

Ghost Rider’s appearance also coincides with the show’s move to 10 p.m., which Chloe Bennet — who plays Daisy — says means a season that’s “darker and sexier” than anything that’s come before. “If anyone’s familiar with the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider,” she says, they know that the show will have to deal with issues of vengeance, penance, the line between good and evil, and who deserves to die. “These massive themes [are] being threaded throughout our season.”

Fight breaks out at Trump rally

A supporter of Donald Trump's appears to have gotten in a fight with two protesters at his rally Monday night in Asheville, North Carolina.

The violence erupted as several protesters were being escorted out by security. A man in the crowd grabbed a male protester around the neck and then punched him.

The man then slapped at a woman being led out.

The Trump supporter was not ejected by security.

The fight broke out as Trump was defending his supporters against Democratic rival Hillary Clinton's comment that half of them belonged in a "basket of deplorables." She later said she regrets describing half of them that way.
