The main problem with the US healthcare system is....

that big money is in charge of that system.

And big money has essentially monetized the US healthcare system. Money is made in a variety of ways, and all at the expense of US patients.

1) the insurance industry skims billions off the top and calls them administrative costs and profits.

2) Big Pharma overcharges US patients, mainly because they have rigged the system to enable it. And that rigging includes purchasing politicians.

3) Hospitals can charge whatever they wish to charge for any of the services they provide. And that is why patients can receive bills that include charges of $5 per tablet of generic aspirin.

4) Medicare is forbidden to negotiate drug prices.

And on and on.

The problem with the ACA, or any system short of a single payer system, is that these supposed fixes allow the very entities that are the cause of the problem to remain in charge.

And to any who speak of the supposed huge cost of Medicare for All, consider these 2 numbers:

1) $5,782, and
2) $11,916.

Those represent the amount spent per person of the Canadian and US systems respectively.

Someone please explain to me why a small, rural, mainly white state like Iowa should exercise

so much influence.

Better, in my view, would be to mandate that there be 5 separate primaries, each consisting of 20% of the electorate, on 5 separate days.

That way, we would not see the ridiculous spectacle of flocks of candidates competing with each other in these tiny diners, and local halls, and school halls where a tiny handful of more rightward leaning voters decide which candidates fail and which candidates lose.

I live near Chicago, population 2.7 million, and we will generally only see candidates a very few times during an election.

In contrast, Iowa has a population of 3.15 million.

Demographically, Iowa is 91% white, versus 60.7% for the nation as a whole.

There are many well qualified female Democrats.

HRC, of course, was far superior.
Warren is far superior.
Harris is far superior.
Klobuchar is far superior.
All of them would be far superior to Trump, or any other GOP candidate.

But for the US corporate media, policies do not matter. Qualifications do not matter. Intelligence and accomplishment do not matter.

What matters is likeability. And what exactly is likeability, and why is it seen as the most important criterion for a female candidate?

My own view is that when the corporate media refer to likeability, they are referring to sexual attractiveness. And a vital part of that perceived attractiveness is attitude. And that attitude must include not being seen as too dominant.

Kamala Harris was seen as too dominant. She would have been brutal on Trump in any legitimate debate format. Warren as well. Too dominant.

But the US corporate media will not honestly admit that, so they fall back on likeability.

Joe Biden Was Right To Call Man Who Pushed Ukraine Conspiracy A Damn Liar

From the article:

There is a more significant point in Biden’s confrontation with a voter who pushed the Ukraine conspiracy, and that is that Joe Biden won’t allow lies to stand.
The 83-year-old voter accused Biden of setting up his son to work in a gas company in Ukraine and selling access to the presidency just like Trump.
Neither of these allegations was true, and Biden wasn’t going to stand there and make nice or offer some talking point answer to obvious lies. Sure, Biden got testy, but only after the voter also challenged his fitness for the presidency.

Trump Campaign Manager Accidentally Tweets Poll That Shows Impeachment Is Destroying The GOP

From the article:

Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign manager, Brad Parscale, released a poll on Thursday that he claimed was evidence that impeachment is hurting Democrats ahead of the election year.

The only problem, of course, is that the polling shows a sizable number of folks in a deep-red region – Oklahoma’s 5th congressional district – supporting Trump’s impeachment.

Was Mister Rogers the messiah?

From the article:

The question seems blasphemous.
But the idea certainly must be in many people’s minds as they emerge from the movie theater after seeing “A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood.”
The film stars Tom Hanks as Fred Rogers, aka Mister Rogers, the iconic children’s television show host. It tells the story of Rogers’ relationship with a journalist who writes for Esquire magazine, based on the real life writer Tom Junod but called Lloyd Vogel in the film. Rogers helps the journalist to repair his relationship with his estranged father, and to become a better husband and father himself. …

And the author leads into:

I am thinking of these words by my friend and teacher Shai Held:
“Judaism dreams of a world in which human dignity is real and the presence of God is manifest. And yet the world as we know it all too often makes a mockery of that dream: Human dignity is trodden and trampled upon in countless ways, and God seems far away, absent, even nonexistent. How do we go on hoping in a seemingly hopeless world?”

Sen. Chris Murphy Drops A Fact Bomb On Sen. John Kennedy's Ukraine Election Interference Lie

From the article:

Sen. Murphy said on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports:
Nobody knows Ukraine better than I do. I’ve been there about five or six times. It’s a hornet’s nest of political rivalries but it is simply a lie to say that the Ukrainian government and President Poroshenko himself meddled in the 2016 election that is made up out of whole cloth and there is no credible reporting to support it and there is no one in the American intelligence community who has come to that conclusion.

I was ready to start a post defending Melania Trump and highlighting her accomplishments,

but I realized that posting most of her accomplishments would probably mean posting many soft core porn pictures.

So I decided to instead point out that among her many accomplishments, Melania....

worked without a work visa,

and used that chain migration thing the GOP hates to bring her parents to the US,

and married someone she thought was much richer than he is.

Am I missing any of her accomplishments?

Children are murded in schools because of a Constitutional Amendment that

makes it easy to murder children in schools.

Or anywhere else, for that matter.

First, the title is a rewording taken from Quichotte, by Salman Rushdie, but it is so brutal, so fitting, that I borrowed it for this short piece.

And to be fair, the Second Amendment, in my view, was never intended to allow for personal, in home ownership of guns by everyone. But Antonin Scalia, that darling of the so-called originalist school, claimed to find that right hidden in the actual words of an Amendment that never mentions any such right.

Part of Scalia's secret formula for this discovery was to redact 1/2 of the original words written by the framers so he could claim to find this individual right in words that actually linked the limited right to membership in a well-regulated militia.

And in consequence, we have children being murdered in schools so weapons manufacturers can profit from their deaths. In this vicious circle of violence, each shooting prompts gun owners to buy more guns and prompts right wing legislators to pass more Bills designed to make it even easier for people to bring guns into schools.

Do Nothing GOP: Democrats Have Passed 400 Bills As Trump Throws Impeachment Tantrums

From the article:

Democrats in the House have been passing bills at a rapid clip; as of November 15, the House has passed nearly 400 bills, not including resolutions. But the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee estimates 80 percent of those bill have hit a snag in the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is prioritizing confirming judges over passing bills.

Congress has passed just 70 bills into law this year. Granted, it still has one more year in its term, but the number pales in comparison to recent past sessions of Congress, which typically see 300-500 bills passed in two years (and that is even a diminished number from the 700-800 bills passed in the 1970s and 1980s).
