Trump sanctions Chinese bank in bid to rein in North Korea

Source: CNN Money

On Thursday, the Treasury Department announced a series of sanctions and measures it plans to take. Among them: severing U.S. financial ties with China's Bank of Dandong, which the administration claims acts as a pipeline to support alleged illicit North Korean financial activity.

Treasury also slapped sanctions on two Chinese individuals and one Chinese company.

The moves come in response to North Korea's ongoing efforts to build missiles and its violations of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

In a statement, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin pledged U.S. commitment to maximize pressure on North Korea until it abandons its nuclear and ballistic missile program.

Moscow prepares retaliation for U.S. seizure of Russian diplomatic compounds

Source: Reuters

Moscow is preparing retaliatory measures to Washington's decision to seize two Russian diplomatic compounds in the United States in 2016, Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

In December, U.S. seized two Russian diplomatic compounds as then President Barack Obama ordered the expulsion of 35 Russians over what he said was their involvement in hacking to interfere in the U.S. presidential election campaign.

Moscow, which denies such allegations, did not retaliate immediately, saying it would wait to see if relations improved under President Donald Trump.

"Retaliatory measures are being prepared. As you understand, such a decision on the issue won't be made only by the foreign ministry," ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

Japan Preparing for North Korea War With 'Hit-to-Kill' Missile Drills

Source: Newsweek

Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force is scheduled to test its PAC3 missile interceptors on Thursday following a series of missile tests by North Korea.

The defense force will test the PAC3, which is designed to shoot down missiles, including any fired at Japan from North Korea, at four bases in Tokyo. PAC3 stands for Patriotic Advanced Capability, and is built by Lockheed Martin. The weapons manufacturer describes it as a “hit-to-kill” missile, and says it “defeats the entire threat: tactical ballistic missiles (TBMs), cruise missiles and aircraft.”

The missiles are part of the U.S. made Patriot missile system and the launch crew helps to protect Tokyo’s metropolitan airspace. The team that launch the system would have very little time to prepare in the event of an enemy strike, the airmen told Stars and Stripes. “I’m always on alert. Even when I go home I’m gathering information. I’m always ready,” Chief Master Sgt. Yoichi Yokoyama, 45, one of four airmen crewing the PAC3 launcher said.
