Kamala Harris's record and character matter -- not the race of her father and husband

Good article from the Wash Post:

California Democratic Sen. Kamala D. Harris hardly had time to finish basking in the glow of her presidential bid’s five-star rollout before 20,000 adoring Oakland hometown fans, when two black-media-inspired questions hit her in the face: Why did she marry a white man? And: Is she black enough?

<snip>

Last March, the Economist-YouGov poll found that 17 percent of Americans think interracial marriage is “morally wrong.” On a racial basis, a nearly equal percentage of respondents felt the same way: 17 percent of whites said it was morally wrong. So did 18 percent of blacks and 15 percent of Hispanics.

Thus, notions of black inferiority still abide in some whites. So too, hostility toward intermarriage among some blacks who regard crossing the color line to marry a white person as an act of racial betrayal.

White and black separatists miss the point. Individuals, regardless of pigmentation, don’t marry a race. Marriage is a decision by two people — not two racial groups — to form a union. They do it because they want to share their lives — with each other.

“Look, I love my husband, and he happened to be the one that I chose to marry because I love him — that was that moment in time, and that’s it. And he loves me.” No more needs saying.

My personal belief is interracial marriage is good for society and their children also benefit from hybrid vigor.

Heterosis, hybrid vigor, or outbreeding enhancement, is the improved or increased function of any biological quality in a hybrid offspring. An offspring is heterotic if its traits are enhanced as a result of mixing the genetic contributions of its parents.

Clearly Kamala is evidence of that!

Kamala Harris is off to the fastest start among Democrats

From The Hill:

Kamala Harris is off to the fastest start among Democrats who have already entered the 2020 presidential race, say party strategists and donors closely following the contest’s early stages.

<snip>

Neither Biden nor Sanders has entered the race, and the polls showing them at the top of the contest likely reflects their widespread name recognition. Biden served eight years as vice president to Barack Obama after a long career in the Senate, while Sanders ran a tough campaign against Hillary Clinton in 2016 for the party’s presidential nomination.

Harris, in contrast, has not been on the national stage nearly as long. She was elected to the Senate in 2016 in a campaign that first brought her to national attention.

Democrats attribute her strong standing to a relatively seamless launch last month.

They say Harris largely beat her competitors to the punch in announcing a full-blown presidential campaign and capitalizing on the momentum which followed.

“There’s always been this motto, 'You have one day to launch and you have to get it right,' and Kamala crushed it,” said Robert Wolf, the prominent Democratic donor. “It’s the day that you have all the media buzz, the grass roots excitement and to tell your story. That is the one day all eyes are on you and she hit out of the ballpark.”

I know its early but I have already made up my mind. Harris is the one. She has what it takes to get the vote out and will know exactly what to do to counter Trump's aggressive insulting style of campaigning and debating. Also, it appears her campaign is very well organized and well run. That's a huge plus.

Also a good VP choice would be either Beto or Julian Castro. Either of those would likely result in a huge victory.

Trump Tower today in NYC

How about the possibility Kavanaugh withdraws and refuses to come out for the hearing?

I think I would if I were him. This final part of the hearing is going to make him look ridiculous.

NY Times Mag: "George Soros Bet Big on Liberal Democracy. Now He Fears He Is Losing."

An excellent although somewhat depressing article about Soros' career.. his achievements, failures, controversies and about how much of the world has treated him unfairly.

Its a long detailed article. Here are a couple of paragraphs:

Yet the political realm is where Soros has made his most audacious wager. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, in 1989, he poured hundreds of millions of dollars into the former Soviet-bloc countries to promote civil society and liberal democracy. It was a one-man Marshall Plan for Eastern Europe, a private initiative without historical precedent. It was also a gamble that a part of the world that had mostly known tyranny would embrace ideas like government accountability and ethnic tolerance. In London in the 1950s, Soros was a student of the expatriated Austrian philosopher Karl Popper, who championed the notion of an “open society,” in which individual liberty, pluralism and free inquiry prevailed. Popper’s concept became Soros’s cause.

It is an embattled cause these days. Under Vladimir Putin, Russia has reverted to autocracy, and Poland and Hungary are moving in the same direction. With the rise of Donald Trump in the United States, where Soros is a major donor to Democratic candidates and progressive groups, and the growing strength of right-wing populist parties in Western Europe, Soros’s vision of liberal democracy is under threat in its longtime strongholds. Nationalism and tribalism are resurgent, barriers are being raised and borders reinforced and Soros is confronting the possibility that the goal to which he has devoted most of his wealth and the last chapter of his life will end in failure. Not only that: He also finds himself in the unsettling position of being the designated villain of this anti-globalization backlash, his Judaism and career in finance rendering him a made-to-order phantasm for reactionaries worldwide. “I’m standing for principles whether I win or lose,” Soros told me this spring. But, he went on, “unfortunately, I’m losing too much in too many places right now.”

Question to Ben Jealous: Do you identify with the term 'socialist'... Ben responds with the F-bomb.

From the Wash Post:

Maryland Democratic gubernatorial nominee Ben Jealous clearly does not like being called a socialist.

On Wednesday, the former NAACP chief was asked at a news conference whether he identified with the term “socialist,” as his political opponent, Gov. Larry Hogan (R), has labeled him.

“Are you f---ing kidding me?” Jealous responded, visibly surprising some of the Democratic elected officials who had gathered to endorse him.

This is not going to help him here in Maryland. He should either embrace the term or politely explain why he doesn't.

Balderson commits huge gaffe before Ohio special election

Ohio state Senator Troy Balderson is running as the Republican in Ohio’s 12th Congressional District special election today. At most points over the past hundred years, this would mean that he was virtually entitled to the seat. But it’s hard to be the Republican candidate in special elections these days—Balderson is locked in a virtual tie with his Democratic opponent, Danny O’Connor, and he didn’t help himself by stepping in a big old pile of shit the day before the election.

The bad moment came when Balderson told a crowd at a rally in Zanesville, OH, that “We don’t want someone from Franklin County representing us.”

Franklin County, apart from being where O’Connor is from, is home to Columbus and is the most heavily-populated county in Ohio. As New York magazine notes, it’s also home to roughly a third of the district’s voters. Oops.

Obstruction of justice bombshell will explode before midterms

From The Hill..

Why is President Trump escalating his attacks against special counsel counsel Robert Mueller, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the Department of Justice, the FBI and the free press to a fever pitch in recent days?

The reason is that the odds are very high that Mueller will offer a declarative public statement before the midterm elections, and very likely before Labor Day, that the president is guilty of obstruction of justice.

The Mueller declaration of obstruction of justice could be issued in the form of a letter to Congress and may or may not ultimately be issued in the form of an indictment if he believes that the Trump situation creates extraordinary circumstances that warrant his seeking approval for a formal indictment.

==================

Sounds right to me. The question is what will the Republicans in congress do.
