I believe the basis for releasing Donnie's tax return is 26 U.S. Code § 6103 (k) (1)

... which states, "Return information shall be disclosed to members of the general public to the extent necessary to permit inspection of any accepted offer-in-compromise under section 7122 relating to the liability for a tax imposed by this title."

An "offer-in-compromise under section 7122" is an agreement between the IRS and a taxpayer to settle a tax debt for less than the amount owed. When this happens, the general public is granted access to the return upon which that agreement was based. I imagine that this access is granted to the general public because someone is being "let off the hook" so to speak, for a tax liability, and the general public has a right to know what this agreement was based on. That seems reasonable to me, as the general public has to to make up the difference between what was owed and what was paid.

Jan. 6 panel to vote on urging DOJ to prosecute Trump on at least three criminal charges

Source: Politico

The Jan. 6 select committee is preparing to vote on urging the Justice Department to pursue at least three criminal charges against former President Donald Trump, including insurrection.

The report that the select panel is expected to consider on Monday afternoon, described to POLITICO by two people familiar with its contents, reflects some recommendations from a subcommittee that evaluated potential criminal referrals. Among the charges that subcommittee proposes for Trump: 18 U.S.C. 2383, insurrection; 18 U.S.C. 1512(c), obstruction of an official proceeding; and 18 U.S.C. 371, conspiracy to defraud the United States government.

Interesting age-related poll from AARP in Walker/Warner race

A poll released on Tuesday by AARP, an interest group for those aged 50 and older, found a significant age gap in voters’ preferences in the Georgia Senate runoff election between incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) and former NFL player Herschel Walker (R).

Warnock leads Walker by 24 percentage points among voters aged 18-49, while Walker leads by 9 points among voters aged 50 or older, according to the poll from AARP Georgia. The two groups differ in their preferences by a total of 33 points.

The first lines of the very first episode of Crusader Rabbit

Narrator: "Down in Texas they're still talking about the little rabbit that'd come down from the United States to wipe out the whole State of Texas. Obviously the rabbit must have been Crusader Rabbit. For who else would have thought of such a wonderful idea!" ~First broadcast August 1, 1950

Seems people had reason to hate on Texas way back in the 50s. I wonder why that is. Maybe for the same reasons as today.

House races yet to be decided, at a glance --- (paywall problem fixed)

This link should now get you past the paywall: From NYT

The dark red and dark blue are counted as won. The lighter shades are still theoretically possible to go either way. Dems needed to win 5 districts where Republicans are currently leading to retain control of the House..

Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to the letter from the Ottoman sultan demanding their surrender

Excerpt: "We will not yield to you, but we will fight you."

"Sultan, son of the cursed Sultan of Turkey, companion of Satan, hellish abysmal Sultan of Turkey, Greek pedestal, cook of Babylon, armourer of Jerusalem, wheelwright of Assyria, winegrower of greater and lesser Egypt, Alexandrian pig farmer, Armenian saddle-piece, Tatar dog, accursed viper living in the world, thief of Kamenets-Podolsky and all the world, subject of the spider and the scarecrow, bogeyman of the whole world, Turkish district busurman [Muslim], I am equal to the body, slanderer of Satan, whole host of hell, cursed messenger of Satan, enemy of the crucified God and persecutor of his servants, hope and comfort of the busurmen [Muslims], and their downfall and sorrow. We will not yield to you, but we will fight you."

The letter and it's several variations are generally recognized as forgeries, but they illustrate the spirit of the ancestors of present day Ukrainians, and inspired this painting by Ilya Repin, a Russian, started in 1880 and finished in 1891, measuring 8'8" x 11'9"

"Hurricane Ian would not have hit Florida if I were still President" /satire

"The weak leadership of the Biden Administration, if you want to call it leadership, frankly, I don't, some people do, but I don't, but the weak leadership of the Biden Administration has invited devastation from Hurricane Ian, everyone says so. Hurricanes no longer respect our weak borders. It's a shame what this country has become, hurricanes enter our nation with impunity. But this is what you can expect from a Democrat administration, hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, some will be named Ian, some will be name Fiona, and someday, I hope, I don't know, but I hope someday one will be named Donald, because as we all know, Donald is great and historic name, and deserves to have a hurricane named after it, but not one that enters our once great nation and creates devastation, horrible horrible devastation the likes of which have never been seen before. And this is what you can expect under my administration, hurricanes NOT entering our nation. It's simple, they would be afraid to, they would know that if they tried to enter our nation they would be met with tremendous force, tremendous tremendous force which would completely stop them in their tracks and drop them down to tropical storms. They don't want that. They want to remain powerful devastating hurricanes, not tropical storms, which are not as powerful and devastating. So they would just not come here, not under my administration. And do you know what else would not come here? People who are not American, American like us, like you and me, people who are different from us, people who eat different food, and listen to different music, music that is not Elton John and the Village People. I could go on and on, but I think you know what I mean. No more hurricanes and no people who are different from us!

How much jail time will Doug Jensen face?

"The felony charges carry a total statutory maximum of 53 years in prison and potential financial penalties. The misdemeanor offenses carry a combined statutory maximum of one year of incarceration and potential financial penalties," the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Plenty of time to reflect on his behavior.
