There are economic warning signs for Trump in the midwest - NY Times

Summary: Trump's economic performance boils down to this: Anywhere he's tried anything big, like agri and manufacturing, things have gotten worse. Everywhere he's left the Obama economy alone is doing great.

By Ben Casselman and Karl RussellDec. 16, 2019

The American economy has found its footing after a summer recession scare. But much of the Midwest is still stumbling.

President Trump campaigned in 2016 on a pledge to restore jobs — manufacturing jobs, specifically — to long-struggling Midwestern communities, and he has made the economy a centerpiece of his re-election campaign.

But job growth has slowed sharply this year in Michigan, Pennsylvania and other states that were critical to Mr. Trump’s victory in 2016, as well as in states like Minnesota that he narrowly lost. Hiring in the region has remained sluggish even as it has picked up this fall in much of the rest of the country. Other economic measures show similar weakness.

Job growth has been slow in key states.

The states are struggling in part because they depend heavily on manufacturing and agriculture, two sectors that have been hit especially hard by Mr. Trump’s trade war. Tariffs have driven up prices for imported parts and materials, and pushed down demand for American goods abroad.

“Apart from agriculture and manufacturing, everything’s going OK,” said Ernie Goss, an economist at Creighton University in Omaha who publishes an economic index that tracks nine states from Minnesota to Arkansas. “Well, in this part of the country that’s not comforting. Those are the two industries we depend on.”

Manufacturing job growth has been declining nationwide . . .

Nigerian Immigrant Explains Why He's the 'Real American' After Breaking MAGA UFC Fighter's Jaw

Nigerian Immigrant Eloquently Explains Why He’s the ‘Real American’ After Breaking MAGA UFC Fighter’s Jaw

A bombastic, Trump-supporting mixed martial arts fighter is desperately hoping that doctors can make his jaw great again after a “Nigerian Nightmare” smashed his MAGA mandible to smithereens, much to the dismay of xenophobic Ultimate Fighting Championship fans.

The main event at Saturday’s UFC 245 featured a matchup between Kamaru Usman, nicknamed “The Nigerian Nightmare,” and Colby Covington, a Trump loyalist supported by Donald Trump Jr. and other fans of putting black and brown people in cages. Before the fight, Covington promised to present the championship belt to Donald Trump at the White House and loudly mocked his adversary’s African heritage, asking: “What has [Usman’s] family ever done for America beside serve in the Federal penitentiary?”

Even though the contest featured two American citizens (Usman’s family immigrated to the U.S. when he was 8 and he gained his citizenship at 9 years old), Covington entered the ring to chants of “USA! USA!” To exacerbate the animus, Covington arrived at the fight wearing a tailor-made suit from the White Nationalist collection of FABA (For Asswipse By Asswipes).

Thoughts on Trump supporters who live in the Fox bubble seeing campaign ads of Trump's incompetence?

Not just incompetence but all the laws he has broken and all the indictments and criminal investigations. We all know how totally incompetent and corrupt he is on an epic level because we watch the mainstream news, however millions only see Fox News and have little idea of what an insane, buffoon he is.

Will the bombardment of horrific reality that is Trump change some minds or not? Maybe some not so hardcore Trump supporters? The type of folks who went ahead and voted for him but don't pay much attention to the news etc. Somewhat reasonable folks who are usually disengaged.

FBI Agents Showed Bias Against Hillary Clinton, Not Against Trump, DOJ Says

Why is this ONLY being reported by a website that very few people read?

The Justice Department inspector general’s report debunked President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that the FBI’s Russia probe was launched out of anti-Trump bias by FBI leaders. Conversely, it did find anti-Hillary Clinton bias among FBI agents.

Trump claimed for years that the FBI investigation was opened because of anti-Trump bias by FBI leaders, citing text messages sent between former top FBI counterintelligence agent Peter Strzok and former FBI lawyer Lisa Page that criticized him during the 2016 campaign. Inspector General Michael Horowitz concluded that neither Strzok nor Page were in a position to start an investigation into Trump’s campaign and concluded that the FBI probe was justified, refuting claims that the probe was opened because of bias by the FBI’s top officials.

Horowitz did find, however, that numerous FBI agents sent anti-Clinton text messages and expressed a desire to investigate the Clinton Foundation, which was at the center of numerous baseless Trump conspiracy theories during the campaign and after the election.

538: Which Senators Are Likely To Vote For Trump's Removal?

On Tuesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats announced two articles of impeachment against President Trump: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Soon, the U.S. House will almost certainly vote to pass those two articles. And then things move to the U.S. Senate, where things seem just as inevitable: The GOP-led Senate will block Trump’s removal.

But it’s worth explaining exactly why we think the Senate won’t vote to remove Trump. So let’s break down the vote among all 100 senators — we expect a mostly party-line vote, but there are actually a number of different incentives at work beneath the surface. (Remember that a two-thirds majority — at least 67 votes — is needed to remove Trump.)

Let’s start with the Democrats.

Almost certain to vote for removal: 44 Democrats

NPR: Student Loans A Lot Like The Subprime Mortgage Debacle, Watchdog Says

December 9, 20194:37 PM ET
Heard on All Things Considered

Mike Calhoun is a man on a mission. He's flying around the country, warning state lawmakers and prosecutors, sounding the alarm at conferences, and with members of Congress.

He did the same thing back before the housing market crash, warning then about reckless subprime loans. "We projected over 2 million subprime mortgage foreclosures, and the response was we were ridiculed by the industry," he says.

Of course, Calhoun was right. In fact, the wave of defaults and foreclosures was even worse and drove the economy into the worst recession in generations.
